Salem, Mass. -- For the second time this season, the Salem State baseball team knocked off a Top 25 opponent. This time, the Vikings upended No. 5 Southern Maine, 6-4 on Thursday afternoon at Salem State's Central Campus Baseball Field. Salem State previously defeated No. 24 Wheaton College, 4-3 on March 27. The Vikings now stand at 12-10 on the season while the Huskies slide to 12-5.

The Vikings jumped out to an early 4-0 lead off starter Chris Bernard (Scarborough, ME), who was pulled after hitting two batters and issuing a walk to start the inning. Alex Tobey (South Berwick, ME) replaced Bernard and gave up a sacrifice fly to Brett Cahill (Gloucester, MA) for the first Vikings' score. Back-to-back errors plated two more runs, and Andrew Deloury (Andover, MA) followed with an RBI double for the fourth Salem State run.

The Huskies closed the gap in the third inning as Paul McDonough (Wells, ME) and Sam Dexter (Oakland, ME) hit back-to-back RBI doubles to draw Southern Maine to within two runs, 4-2. However, the Vikings added a run in the bottom of the inning on a Mike Lamothe (Beverly, MA) base hit.

The Huskies' Matt Verrier (Norway ME) blasted a solo homerun over the left field fence in the fourth to make it a 5-3 game. Dan Kinnon (Londerry, NH) came on in relief in the fourth for Southern Maine, as the Huskies emptied their bullpen to close out the game. Ryan Browner (Georgetown, MA) pitched the fifth for Southern Maine.

Salem State reliever Mike Davis (Peabody, MA) replaced Matt Burnham (Lynn, MA) in the sixth with the lead. Burnham gave up three runs on six hits and had three strikeouts.

Andrew Richards (South Portland, ME) replaced Browner in the seventh who pitched one and two thirds scoreless innings. Dylan Morris (Bangor, ME), who allowed an insurance run to Salem State in the eighth on a base hit by Matt Burgess (Kingston, MA), finished the game for the Huskies.

Southern Maine tried to make it interesting in the ninth, scoring a run on a Forrest Chadwick (Gardiner, ME) triple, but Davis got Bernard to groundout to second to end the game.

Burnham (1-3) picked up the win while Davis earned the save with four innings of work. Davis allowed just one run on three hits with two strikeouts.

Bernard (1-3) took the loss after not recording an out in the first. Richard Fecteau (Newbury, MA) had a 3-for-4 day at the plate while Burgess and Deloury each collected a pair of hits for Salem State. Glauser finished 2-for-4 with a run for the Huskies.

The Vikings will return to action on Saturday when they play MCLA in a double-header at home starting at 1:00 PM. The Huskies will play a double-header tomorrow at 12:00 PM against UMass-Dartmouth.
