Yeomen Take Two From the Lords

Gambier, Ohio - The Oberlin College baseball team opened its four-game league series against the Kenyon College Lords, winning 11-1 and 10-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Mike McDonald struck out a career-high 11 hitters as he went the distance in the lid-lifter. The Weston, Connecticut, native needed just 89 pitches as he allowed just four hits and the one earned run. A total of 76 percent of his pitches went for strikes as he was in the zone 68 times in the game. The senior improved to 4-1 on the year as his ERA now sits at 0.93. In 29 innings pitched, he has racked up 32 strikeouts.

The Yeomen scored in each of the first three innings and never looked back as they cruised to the win. Oberlin plated a pair in the first and added one in the second before erupting for six runs in the third.

Jeff Schweighoffer stayed red hot as he was 3-for-3 with two hit-by-pitches and two runs scored. Classmate Andrew Hutson had five RBIs as he was 2-for-4. Benjamin Whitener and Kyle Decker also had two hits apiece in the win.

Hutson sent home the first run of the game with an RBI double to left center and Whitener then followed with a sacrifice fly to center.

Decker made it a 3-0 game in the top of the second with a two-out RBI single to left before the Lords scratched out their lone run of the game in the bottom of the inning.

Oberlin then busted things wide open with a six-run third. In the inning Mitch Novak had a two-run single before Hutson came through with a two-out three-run double to left field to make it a 9-1 game.

McDonald would strikeout the side in the third on just 12 pitches and was lights out the rest of the way to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.

In game two the Yeomen led 10-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, but the game got very dicey down the stretch. The Lords posted six runs in the inning to make it just three-run game with two at-bats left in the balance.

In the eighth Kenyon would load the bases with just one out, but a back-pick at third base from catcher Blaise Dolcemaschio was then followed with a groundout to get the Yeomen out of the inning unharmed. Rookie left-hander Kyle Dominy got the final five outs of the game to record his this third save of the season.

The two teams traded runs in the first, but the Yeomen would open up a 5-1 lead by scoring four in the fourth. Justin Cruz had a two-run double and Novak added a two-RBI single in the inning.

Oberlin would really bust the game open by scoring five runs in the top of the seventh. Decker, McDonald and Ryan Bliss each came through with run-producing hits in the inning.

Sophomore southpaw Jordan Cohen worked three innings of scoreless relief that saw him allow just two hits as he earned his first win of the season.

The Yeomen finished with 12 hits in the game as Novak, McDonald, Hutson and Cruz each checked in with two. Schweighoffer went 1-for-4 in the nightcap to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.

The Yeomen improved to 11-5 overall and 4-0 in the NCAC East with the win. Kenyon dropped to 8-12 and 0-6 in league play.

These same two teams will do it again tomorrow with first pitch of the doubleheader set for noon.
