New Paltz Baseball Falls to Oswego, 7-6, in Final Inning

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – SUNY Oswego junior John Rauseo hit a game-tying two run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning and the visiting Lakers pushed across the game-winning run five batters later to post a 7-6 comeback victory over the State University of New York at New Paltz baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Loren Campbell Field.
 
The Hawks headed into the bottom of the ninth with a 6-4 lead after getting a big insurance run off a double to right field from sophomore catcher Tyler Bell (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) that scored junior outfielder Richard Guido(Ulster Park, N.Y./Kingston). The Lakers managed to rally when it counted, however, stringing together four hits in the bottom of the ninth to register the win. Oswego freshman pinch hitter Eric Hamilton laced a single to right field in the bottom of the ninth to drive home the Lakers' winning run. 
 
With the loss, New Paltz drops to 10-15, 2-7 SUNYAC. Oswego improves to 11-6, 3-3 SUNYAC. The Hawks next travel to FDU-Florham for a 3 p.m. game on Wednesday, April 9. Oswego next hosts SUNY Cortland on Tuesday, April 8 at 3 p.m.

New Paltz, which got four scoreless innings of relief work from its bullpen staff – including a big strikeout from freshman Chris Brewer (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) in the bottom of the seventh with runners on second and third – came back from a 3-1 deficit after two innings to take a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. 
 
Sophomore infielder Chris Baltera (Commack, N.Y./Commack) drilled a single through the middle to score sophomore outfielder Taylor Anderson that led to a 5-3 New Paltz lead.  It was an impressive comeback for the Hawks, who banged out 12 hits, including two doubles off the left field wall from junior infielder Shaun Hansen(Southold, N.Y./Greenport) and junior infielder Mike Sparacino (Commack, N.Y./Commack).
 
Oswego closed the gap to 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh when Rauseo scored off a single to left by senior Tim Smith.
 
Senior Chris Pyz (Kings Park, N.Y/Kings Park) started and went 3.2 innings allowing seven hits and three runs. Oswego sophomore Josh Martin went 3.1 innings, scattering four hits and one run to improve his record to 3-0.
