Maritime Baseball Drops a Pair to Farmingdale in Skyline Doubleheader

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (March 22, 2014) – On Saturday afternoon the Maritime baseball team dropped a pair of matchups to the Farmingdale Rams by the scores of 14-5 and 4-3 at Rams Stadium.

The second game was a solid battle between the two Skyline Conference opponents as the Rams held on for a 4-3 victory.

Senior Nick Sarna (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony's) got the start for the Privateers in the nightcap and worked around a pair of two-out singles to retire the side in the bottom of the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, the Rams plated a pair of runs on three hits to take the first lead of the game. In the top of the third, the Privateer bats went down quietly as Farmingdale starter Alex Weingarten got through the first three innings without allowing a hit.

The Privateers were held hitless through the fifth inning but in the sixth inning to take their first lead of the game. JuniorPat Kirk (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) singled with one out, followed by senior Nick Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph By the Sea) also reaching on a base knock. Senior Tom Bauer (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) attempted to bunt over the pair of base runners, but reached on an error by the pitcher that allowed Bauer to reach third and the Privateers to tie the game at two.

Freshman Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) singled through the left side to plate Bauer and gave Maritime the lead at 3-2 in the sixth inning.

Sarna stayed on into the sixth inning but was unable to retire a batter as he left the game with the bases loaded. Senior Trevor Canella came on to provide some relief, a sacrifice fly and a single allowed two runs to score to put the Rams ahead once again at 4-3.

Maritime came up in the top of the 7th and junior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and sophomore D.J. Seymour (Nassau, Bahamas/Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Ga.)) both struck out. Junior Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) singled, and freshman Lenny Baldassare (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) pinch ran and stole second base. Sophomore Bruce Tyler (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) pinch hit for freshman Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) and struck out to end the ball game.

The loss was saddled to Sarna after going five innings allowing four runs on eight hits, while striking out three. Cannella finished off the game allowing one hit and a walk with one strikeout. Weingarten picked up the win after going the complete game while allowing three unearned runs and struck out six Privateers.

In game one, Maritime fell behind early in the first inning as senior pitcher Kurt Niemeyer (Nanuet, N.Y./Nanuet Senior)allowed five runs in the frame on six hits with one error behind him.

The offense chipped away in the top of the second inning with Seymour getting struck by a pitch, then Doerbecker collecting a single. Stewart reached on an error to load the bases. Kirk hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to chase home Seymour with Maritime's first run.

Farmingdale added four more runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, and one more in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 10-1 advantage over the Privateers.

The top of the fourth inning, saw Stewart get a rally started with a single, followed by Kirk picking up a base hit as well. Galli then reached on a fielder's choice that erased Stewart at third base, while Bauer walked to load the bases.

McLaughlin then collected a double to the right centerfield gap to plate two more Maritime runs. Sophomore Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) then grounded out to chase home Bauer with Maritime's fourth run of the game. Junior Matt Sollin then doubled as McLaughlin scored to cut the lead in half at 10-5.

Niemeyer allowed two more runs in the sixth as Farmingdale opened up a seven-run advantage. Junior Paul Pfundstein(Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) yielded one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Rams took a 13-5 advantage. Farmingdale added two more in the bottom of the eighth to pull away with the 14-5 victory.

Taking the loss in the opener was Niemeyer after allowing 10 earned runs on 16 hits over five innings of work. Pfundstein yielded three runs on seven hits over three innings of work. Picking up the win was Kevin Cashman, after allowing one hit over three innings of work in relief.

Maritime (2-9, 1-2 Skyline) will return to the field tomorrow for a "road" contest at Reinhart Field, when the Privateers take on John Jay at 11 a.m. at the Reinhart Baseball Field.

Farmingdale (10-3, 2-0 Skyline) will head on the road for its next game against Mount St. Vincent next Saturday, on March 29 at 12 p.m. at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
