Moravian Wins 24th Contest with 8-1 Victory at DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. --- Sophomores Anthony Zaloga and Ian Carbone and senior Chris Soltys combined to allow just two hits, four walks and a run as the Moravian College baseball team improved to 24-6 on the season with an 8-1 non-conference victory at DeSales University Wednesday.

The Greyhounds, who were ranked 29th in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Poll this week, won by the 8-1 score for the second time this week, and it marked the 14th time this season that the Hounds have scored at least eight runs and the squad is 14-0 in those games.

Zaloga, making his return from an injury, tossed five innings with a run on two hits and three walks while striking out three batters to improve to 3-0 on the season. Carbone struck out four of the 10 batters he faced over three innings while Soltys allowed a walk in the ninth during his team-leading 12th appearance of the season.

Moravian jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two runners on, sophomore first baseman Charles Savite connected on a one-out RBI single up the middle while junior third baseman Ryan Luke drove in a run with an RBI fielder's choice.

The Bulldogs cut the Hounds' advantage in half with their only run of the game in the bottom of the first.

The Greyhounds added another two runs in the top of the fourth. Senior second baseman Daniel Seitzinger hit an RBI double down the right field line for his 99th career hit while freshman left fielder Anthony Gaetaniello drove in a run when he reached on a DeSales error, one of five errors by the Bulldogs.

Moravian tacked on a run in the top of the seventh for a 5-1 lead when junior designated hitter Justin Pilchman hit an RBI sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.

The Greyhounds made their lead 7-1 with two more runs in the eighth inning. Junior right fielder Matt Hanson plated a run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded while Savite had an RBI ground out.

The Hounds finished off the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth on an infield RBI single by Gaetaniello.

Moravian had a 10-2 advantage in hits in the contest with junior shortstop Colin Case going 3-for-6. Savite was 2-for-5 for the Greyhounds.

The Hounds are slated to return to action with a Landmark Conference doubleheader at The University of Scranton on Saturday, April 19. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., and Moravian needs to win just one game to clinch a spot in the 2014 Landmark Tournament that begins on Saturday, May 3.
