Providence, R.I.-Senior left fielder Justin Costa (Cranston, RI) scored the game-winning run on a walk-off RBI single from junior pinch hitter Patrick Rogers (Waterford, CT) in the bottom of the 10th inning, propelling the Rhode Island College baseball team past UMass Dartmouth, 9-8 (10 innings), in Little East Conference action at Anchorman Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Rhode Island College (10-13, 3-4 LEC) wins its second straight Little East Conference contest and moves into a three-way tie with UMass Boston and UMass Dartmouth (12-13, 3-4 LEC) for fourth place in the league standings.

The Anchormen scratched the first run of the game in the bottom of the first when junior second baseman Dean Beshansky (Cumberland, RI) scored on an error to make it, 1-0. However, the Corsairs battled back to post three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead. After junior designated hitter Alex Newton (Saco, ME) came around to score on an RBI single from junior right fielder Ben Monteiro (Swansea, MA) for the first run of the frame, junior shortstop Nate Farias (Fall River, MA) later scored on an error, while Monteiro added another tally on sophomore second baseman Matt Russell's (Townsend, MA) RBI ground out to shortstop.

Trailing by two, the Anchormen bounced back with a five-run third inning to take a 6-3 lead over the Corsairs. Sophomore designated hitter Angelo St. Laurent (Cranston, RI) spearheaded the scoring frenzy with an RBI double down the right field line that plated Beshansky, while sophomore right fielder Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA) came around to score moments later on one of UMD's four errors in the contest. After St. Laurent and senior first baseman Justin Rainville (Cumberland, RI) each scored on wild pitches later in the inning, junior left fielder Tyler Santaniello (Cumberland, RI) tacked on the fifth run of the frame when he scored on an RBI ground out from freshman catcher Tyler Rains (North Kingstown, RI).

RIC recorded another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-3 lead over the Corsairs after Foley crossed the plate on St. Laurent's two-out single to center field. However, UMass Dartmouth stormed from behind to tie the game, 7-7, with a single run in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth.

Following a sacrifice fly from Farias that plated junior catcher Cory DeMedeiros (Fall River, MA) in the top of the fifth, junior third baseman George Agostini (Dighton, MA) doubled down the left field line to drive in sophomore left fielder Joe Zottoli (Holden, MA) for the first run of the sixth inning. Russell scored later in the frame on an RBI single from junior first baseman Alberto Vazquez (Roxbury, MA) to pull the visitors within one, while Agostini followed with the game-tying run and made it, 7-7, after scoring on a fielder's choice.

In the top of eighth, UMD broke the deadlock and took an 8-7 lead over the hosts after junior center fielder Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, MA) led off the frame with a single to right field, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Russell, and then scored from second on a two-out single to right field by DeMedeiros.

Behind the right arm of senior reliever Karney Boff (North Dighton, MA), the Corsairs held the Anchormen off the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning to keep the one-run lead intact. However, UMD was stymied at the plate in the top of the ninth by RIC junior right-hander Kyle Morvan (Smithfield, RI), who came out of the bullpen and quickly retired the side to keep the Anchormen within a run.

Trailing by a run in the bottom of the ninth, Santaniello singled to left field with one out in the frame to spark the hosts offensively. After advancing to both second and third on a wild pitch, Santaniello was driven home by freshman third baseman Sean Getman (Oneonta, NY), who blasted an RBI single to right field to tie the game, 8-8.

After RIC senior left-hander C.J. Tsoumakas (Hope, RI) came out the bullpen and recorded a perfect top of the 10th inning to keep the Corsairs at bay, Costa opened the bottom half of the frame with a leadoff single to center field. Following a single by Beshansky that moved Costa from first to third, Rogers stepped in and chopped a single up the middle, scoring Costa easily and giving the Anchormen the walk-off, 9-8, victory.

Beshansky went 3-for-6 with a double and two runs scored to pace RIC at the dish, while St. Laurent went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Rainville added a pair of hits and a run scored, while Getman chipped in with two hits, a walk, and one RBI. Foley contributed with a 2-for-5 performance that included a double and two runs scored.

Newton carried UMD offensively with a 5-for-5 outing at the plate that included a double and a run scored. Agostini and Russell each went 2-for-5 with one RBI and a run scored, while DeMedeiros went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored.

Tsoumakas recorded the win for RIC (3-3) in his first relief outing of the season, while Boff (1-3) was tagged with the loss for UMD despite hurling four strong innings out of the bullpen.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Curry tomorrow afternoon (3:30 p.m.).
