OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 17, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team splits its doubleheader with SUNY Old Westbury on Wednesday evening and erupted for 12 runs in the night cap. With the split, Stevens is now 13-8 overall, while Old Westbury is 12-18.
Game One: Old Westbury 3, Stevens 1
The Ducks' bats were baffled in the opener by Old Westbury starter Arismendy Nunez, who allowed just three runners through seven innings and needed just 79 pitches to finish off the no-hitter.
Sophomore Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) was originally credited with a triple in the third inning that plated junior Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.J.), but was corrected to a three-base error. Calleo reached base on a walk.
Senior Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) was the only other Stevens hitter to reach base in the opener by way of an error in the seventh inning.
The Panthers scored once in the first, third and fifth innings.
Junior Peirce Marston (Silver Spring, Md.) tossed five solid innings in a losing effort on the mound with four strikeouts. Marston gave up six hits, walked two and gave up two earned runs.
Classmate Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) threw the final inning in relief and allowed one runner on a hit by pitch.
Game Two: Stevens 12, Old Westbury 4
Stevens' hitters found their stride in the night cap and produced 12 runs on six hits, eight walks and a hit by pitch.
Trailing 1-0 after an inning of play, the Ducks scored once in the second on a pick-off play that allowed junior Ryan Mannello (Staten Island, N.Y.) to come home. Mannello led off the frame with a single then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Calleo walked with two outs and was picked off, but Mannello crossed home before the out was recorded.
In the third, Stevens scored six times on four hits. Senior Curt Lowenstein (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) led off the inning, stole second and eventually came home on an error. Sieber reached on a fielder's choice, and after a walk to junior Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.J.), Allen stroked a double to bring both runners in. Sophomore Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) followed with a single and a sacrifice fly from Mannello drove in Allen. Freshman Bret Viola (Carmel, N.Y.) continued the rally with a base hit to bring Calleo to the plate, who singled in Yano and Viola to cap off the frame.
The Ducks played five more runs in the fifth without the benefit on a base hit. Five walks and a hit batter led to three runs and the other two came home on an error and fielder's choice. Yano, Calleo, junior Gregg Nickels (Simpsonville, S.C.), sophomore Tyler Bush (Bristol, Conn.) and freshman Harrison Kate (North Brunswick, N.J.) all reached on free passes, while sophomore Thomas Sheridan (Staten Island, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch.
Westbury attempted a comeback with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth, but only placed one runner on in its final two at bats.
Yano picked up the win for Stevens in four innings of work with six punch outs. Yano surrendered three hits and a run before exiting the game. Freshman Will Korosec (Cream Ridge, N.J.) struck out two in the fifth, while sophomore Daniel McIntyre (Lakeway, Texas) fanned a pair in the sixth. Sophomore Ryan Patterson (Staten Island, N.Y.) tossed the seventh and struck out one.
The Ducks head to SUNY Brockport next for another double dip on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m. Stevens returns home on April 21 for an 8 p.m. contest against New Jersey City University for Senior Night.
