BROCKTON, Mass. – After a bases clearing double by Jose Pena (Boston, Mass.) tied the game at 7-7, junior Kyle Szatrowski (Agawam, Mass.) ripped a single to deep right center field to plate his teammate and give baseball an 8-7 non-conference win over Western New England University Friday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium.

The walk-off win for the Beacons improved their overall record to 12-13, and brought an end to the Golden Bears six-game unbeaten streak (5 wins, 1 tie) as they fell to 12-15-1.

After crawling back from a three-run deficit the Beacons got their first runner on in the bottom of the ninth on a hit by pitch.  Charlie LaPaglia (Marshfield, Mass.) would reach first on an error by the third baseman to put runners on first and second.  Pena, who was red hot for the Beacons absolutely crushed the ball off the right field wall sending the two runners around the bases.

Jason Cholish (Exton, Pa.), who was hit by the pitch, would reach without a problem to tie the game at 7-7.  As LaPaglia came around to score what would have been the game-winning run, the Golden Bears catcher was waiting following a perfectly executed relay   Now with two outs and Pena ready to go at second, Szatrowski ripped another deep ball to the outfield on a 1-0 count to give the Beacons the victory.

Thursday's win went to lefty reliever Harlan Zeerip (Bridgewater, Conn.), following 1 1/3 innings of work.  He allowed just one hit in his short appearance to earn his second win of the year.  In his second straight start, Steve Roche (Worcester, Mass.) was solid as the junior righty went six complete and allowed just three runs, one earned, on six hits.  He also fanned one and walked another.

The Beacons combined for 12 hits in the victory, with Pena recording the team's lone double, while Jamill Moquete (Boston, Mass.) crushed his third triple of the season in the fifth.  Pena closed out the victory 4-for-5 at the dish with the game-tying RBI and two runs scored.  Anthony Searles (Shelton, Conn.) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI.  Moquete and Daniel Mantoni (Northbridge, Mass.) each had a pair of hits and combined for two RBI and three runs scored respectively.

The non-conference loss went to David Cherry who entered the contest in the seventh.  Now 0-3 on the year, Cherry went 2 1/3 and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits.  He entered when the Golden Bears were leading 6-5 and was in line for the save.  He would get some run support in the top of the eighth to make it 7-5.  However the Beacons would chip away at Cherry and the Golden Bears scoring one-run in the eighth before recording the game-winning two-run ninth.

Steve Buckley led the Golden Bears as he went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.  T.J. Wyrebek recorded the lone extra base-hit for WNEU as the second baseman went 2-for-5.

Baseball returns to action tomorrow when they host Keene State College in a Little East Conference doubleheader at Campanelli Stadium.  Game one is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
