OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team registered a senior day no-hitter by Arisemendy Nunez in game one's 3-1 victory over the visiting Stevens Ducks from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex Thursday evening. Stevens captured a 12-4 final in game two for the split. Old Westbury now stands at 12-18 while Stevens moved to (12-9). Prior to the start of game two, seniors Alexander Abanavas (2011-14), John Angelino (2012-14),Frank DiMaria (2010, 2012-14), Alex DiSanto (2013-14), Tyler Levine (2011-14), Kevin Licul (2014), Nunez (2013-14), Braylin Perez (2014), James Scagnelli (2013-14), Byron White (2014) and James Wipperman (2013-14) were honored with a senior day ceremony for their dedication to Old Westbury Athletics.
Game One: Old Westbury 3, Stevens 1
Old Westbury broke into the scoring column off a two-out rally in the first inning. Jonathan Pagan singled, stole second and two batters later scored off Byron White's RBI single for the early lead.
Stevens reached base for the first time with a Mark Calleo one out walk in the third. Two batters later, the Ducks answered with a two-out fielding error by right fielder Jacob Coners that allowed Calleo to score from second to even the score.
Old Westbury jumped ahead in the third with a Michael Cardino sacrifice fly that scored Nick Yip for a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, Pagan singled and advanced to third off a two-base error by center fielder Dan Allen, then scoring off Peirce Martson's wild pitch to put the Panthers up 3-1.
Nunez (4-2) tossed 79 pitches and allowed just three base runners to register his first career no-hitter. The complete game outing was Nunez's third of the season while the senior fanned four batters with one walk.
Martson (1-2) allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks in five innings to earn Stevens' loss.
Pagan (2-3, 2 R) recorded his eighth multi-hit and sixth multi-run game off the season while extending his scoring streak to seven games.
Game Two: Stevens 12, Old Westbury 4
Coners drew a leadoff walk in the first for the Panthers and Nick Yip's single then advanced him to second followed by a wild pitch to stand on third. Coners would come around to score off Pagan's sacrifice hit for the 1-0 Panther advantage.
Stevens evened the game in the second by advancing Ryan Mannello home as Calleo was picked off at first to end the inning.
Stevens erupted in the third to cut starter Braylin Perez's outing short by scoring six runs off four hits to pull in front 7-1.
Panther reliever Tyler Levine pitched a perfect fourth inning before James Wipperman allowed five runs (four earned) runs in the fifth. James Scagnelli logged two scoreless innings and Alex DiSanto added one of his own.
Old Westbury added three runs in the fifth, scoring Matteo Gaudio off Coners' sacrifice hit; Jesse Matos off a passed ball andRobinson Hernandez off an error by shortstop Michael Yorita.
Yip's (2-2) seventh multi-hit game of the season paced the Panthers offensively.
Perez (1-4) lasted three innings, allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks to suffer Old Westbury's loss.
Jayson Yano (2-2) dealt four innings on the mound, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six batters to earn the win.
