Kuzniar gets 200th hit, Toms split with Bethel

St. Thomas senior Tim Kuzniar went 3-for-7 in Tuesday's MIAC doubleheader at Bethel and became the 10th player in conference baseball history to reach 200 career hits. Kuzniar's three-run home run in the nightcap was hit No. 200 as the No. 10-ranked Tommies (24-6 overall, 13-1 MIAC) pulled away to take game two, 11-4.

Bethel (17-6, 10-2) won the opener 5-4 on Mike Schultz' walk-off solo home run in the seventh inning. That ended UST's 14-game winning streak. The Toms ended Bethel's seven-game winning streak in the nightcap.

St. Thomas freshman Logan Borg and senior J.D. Dorgan each went 3-for-3 with three RBI in game two, and Borg finished the day 5-for-6. Junior RHP Colin Wendinger (5-0) allowed two earned runs in eight innings, blanking the Royals from the second through seventh innings, and recorded the pitching win.

Game two was knotted 2-2 in the fifth inning with two out when Dorgan slapped a two-run double to put the Toms ahead to stay. Borg followed with his first collegiate home run to extend the lead to 6-2.

Game two lasted 3:00 on the clock and included 23 hits, 11 walks, seven errors, and five hit-by-pitch.

In game one, Bethel took a 4-1 lead after four innings. UST's Kelvin Stroik's first collegiate home run – a two-run blast to left -- and Tyler Peterson's solo homer tied the game moments later. Bethel pulled out the victory with Schultz' one-out, solo homer to left field in the last of the seventh.

Grant Anderson went 5-for-6 on the day for Bethel. Dorgan and Peterson each had four hits for St. Thomas.

The Tommies play Saturday at Carleton, and close their conference schedule the following week with two at St. John's and two at Augsburg.

Bethel plays two Wednesday on the road against Augsburg and also has remaining doubleheaders against St. Olaf and Concordia-Moorhead on the road, and St. Mary's at home.
