More news about: Rhode Island College

North Dartmouth, Mass.-Freshman third baseman Sean Getman (Oneonta, NY) went 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Rhode Island College baseball team dropped a 9-3 Little East Conference game at UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday afternoon.

The Corsairs scored seven runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. With the win, the Corsairs (15-16) remain in third place in the conference circuit with a 6-4 mark, while the Anchormen (11-17) move into a three-way tie for fourth place with Plymouth State and UMass Boston at 4-6.

Freshman Sean Callahan (Colchester, VT) recorded his third complete-game of the season to raise his individual record to 4-0.  The right-hander scattered three runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits, while striking out five.

UMass Dartmouth used a balanced offensive attack as eight of its nine starters registered at least one hit.  Junior Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, MA) paced the 14-hit attack with a 3-for-5 showing at the plate with a run scored and two RBI.  Classmate Ben Monteiro (Swansea, MA) was 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, while junior Cory DeMedeiros (Fall River, MA) and classmate Alberto Vasquez (Roxbury, MA) each tallied two hits.

Leading 2-1 after the fourth inning, the Corsairs sent 10 batters to the plate to erupt for seven runs on six hits.  DeMedeiros ignited the surge with a single to left field, while Vasquez followed suit with a single up the middle.  With one out, Rhode Island College loaded the bases with a hits batsman and Monteiro ripped a two-run single back through the box to extend the lead to 4-1.

Sophomore Reece Tanguay (Essex Junction, VT) placed a single through the left side of the diamond, while Mederios chased the Anchorman starting pitcher with a double to right field.  Junior George Agostini (Rehoboth, MA) greeted relief pitcher senior Brad Van Fechtmann (East Greenwich, RI) with double down the left field line and later scored on an errant throw to provide the hosts with more than enough run support.

The Anchormen registered an unearned run in the seventh, while sophomore right fielder Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA) completed the scoring with a run-producing single with two outs in the top of the ninth.

Foley was 1-for-4 with a walk and a RBI, while classmate center fielder Justin Costa (Cranston, RI) also reached base twice with a hit and base on ball. Junior Dylan Cummiskey (Warwick, RI) allowed seven earned runs on 12 hits in 4.2 innings of work to earn the loss.  Van Fechtmann was effective in relief, limiting the hosts to an unearned run and two hits.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Framingham State on Wednesday, April 23 (3:30 p.m.).
