Allegheny Overcomes Early Deficit to Outslug Blue Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Trailing in the second inning, the Allegheny bats came alive in the third and fourth innings as the Gators picked up a, 11-5 win over the Blue Devils on Thursday afternoon at Ludwig Field.

Senior Kyle Davis and junior Zach Gray drove in three runs apiece to tie for the team lead, while freshmanRobert DiMaggio set a new career-high with a team-high three runs.  Freshman Chase Boyer picked up his third win of the season while sophomore Joe Killian picked up two hits while scoring twice and driving in two runs. 

Fourth year Mike Pezzone maintained his team-leading batting average with two hits, scoring a run.  The Gators combined for five extra base hits, as a pair of doubles from Pezzone and a triple from Gray highlighted the Allegheny offensive success.

The Blue Devils scored the first two runs of the afternoon in the second inning, taking a brief lead before the Allegheny offense struck in the top of the third.  After DiMaggio reached base on a Fredonia State miscue, junior Eric Weyant was hit to put two runners aboard with no outs.  A sacrifice bunt by Davis pushed both runners into scoring position, opening the door for Killian's single that scored Weyant and DiMaggio, tying the game.  A double by Pezzone put runners on the corners, as the Gators took the lead on a two-run triple to right center by Gray.

After Fredonia State scored one run in the third, Allegheny tacked on two additional runs after a double by Davis plated Weyant and DiMaggio, spotting Hale a 6-3 lead heading into the fourth.  Boyer took over for freshman Zach Hale in the fourth, holding the Blue Devils scoreless during two innings of relief.
 
In the top of the fifth, a walk to senior Shane Regel and single to left by DiMaggio put two runners aboard with one out, as Weyant singled to left center to drive home Regel and increase the Allegheny lead to four runs.  DiMaggio scored later on in the inning to give Allegheny a five-run lead.

Freshman Robert Julian pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh inning while Allegheny continued the offensive success in the seventh, as a leadoff double by Killian led to a run on a groundout by Gray.  JuniorBen Murray scored in the top of the eighth on a passed ball, as the Gator lead increased to 11-3 after Regel crossed home plate on a fielder's choice.  Junior Matt Jankowiak, Pezzone and freshman Corey Marshalltook to the mound over the final two innings to shut the door on Allegheny's 24th win of the 2014 campaign.

Currently ranked seventh in the most recent NCAA Division III Mideast Region Rankings, Allegheny will next travel to Wooster, Ohio to battle the Fighting Scots in a four-game series slated to start on Saturday, Apr. 26.  Assured of a home NCAC Crossover series next weekend, the Gators will face an opponent yet to be determined on Saturday, May 3 at 12 p.m. to start the three-game series.
