Albright Splits on Senior Day, Misses Commonwealth Berth

More news about: Albright

The Albright College baseball team split a doubleheader on Saturday with Stevenson, losing 3-2 in 11 innings and coming back with a 2-0 win the nightcap.

The Lions entered the day needing a sweep, and an Elizabethtown sweep vs. Lebanon Valley, in order to qualify for the Commonwealth Conference championships.

Things were looking good early, as Elizabethtown quickly shut down LVC for a 4-0 game one victory just as the Lions were taking a 2-1 lead into the seventh and final inning at Kelchner Field.

Albright couldn't hold on unfortunately, as Scott Merkel reached on an error and scored unearned on Bret Schilling's groundout to tie the contest.

Micah Storms led off the bottom of the eighth with a double, and pinch runner Nathan Fretz advanced to third base on a sacrifice. Fretz was caught in a rundown however, as the Lions came up empty.

Stevenson scored the winning run in the top of the 11th, as Ian Eberly doubled in Ben Hallam. Albright had previously escaped a jam in the 10th by throwing out Tom Goulian and Schilling (at home) in the same wild play.

Junior Zac Okonski was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the opener, while classmate John Medvecky went 2-for-5 and scored once.

The Stevenson comeback ultimately didn't decide Albright's fate, with Lebanon Valley holding off Elizabethtown 8-5 in the second game of their doubleheader. Meanwhile, the Lions recovered to win game two 2-0 with another gem from freshman starting pitcher Daniel Louviaux.

Louviaux struck out six for his second straight complete game conference shutout. He improves to 4-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his rookie season.

The Lions did their damage in the first inning. Max Dundore singled to load the bases, and Nate Peiffer scored on Gabe Santone's groundout. Evan High then singled in Medvecky for a 2-0 lead.

It was Senior Day, and the Lions recognized their six departing players- Peiffer, Peter DeFrancisci, Zach Graham, Collin Hecker, Seth Heffner and Brian Kurtz.

The Lions will conclude their season on Monday vs. Kutztown University in FirstEnergy Stadium. Tickets are $5 and can be obtained from players on campus, or at the gate.
