Stevens: Baseball Drops a Pair of Pitchers Duels at St. John Fisher

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (May 3, 2014) – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team was on the wrong end of two close Empire 8 Conference games at St. John Fisher College on Saturday at Dugan Yard. Stevens (20-12) dropped Game One, 3-2, and fell in the nightcap, 2-0.

Fisher (25-9) came into Saturday's doubleheader ranked No. 27 in the latest ABCA Top 30 poll.

The Ducks managed just eight hits in the double dip and committed eight errors, while Fisher collected 11 hits and made just one error.

Game One: Fisher 3, Stevens 2

Both starting pitchers in the opener pitched exceptionally well. Stevens' sophomore Jayson Yano (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) suffered the loss but gave up just four hits over 5.2 innings with four strikeouts. Yano allowed three runs, none earned before exiting the contest for classmate Ryan Patterson (Staten Island, N.Y.) who threw 1/3 of an innings.

The Cardinals lefty, Justin D'Amato, picked up his eighth win of the season in six innings of work with five strikeouts. D'Amato allowed five hits with no earned runs and a pair of walks. Ryan Smith saved the game with two punch outs in the seventh inning.

The Ducks jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning but that was all the offense they could produce in Game One. After sophomore Jonathan Toro (Sanford, Fla.) reached on an error to lead off the game and then stole a base, senior Dan Allen (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) doubled to left field to pick up a run batted in. Sophomore Nicholas Sieber (Shrewsbury, Mass.) singled two batters later to bring home Allen for Stevens' final run of the contest.

Fisher scored once in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch and then took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. In that inning, the Cardinals scored once again on a wild pitch and then picked up an RBI single for the game-winning run.

After the first inning, Stevens only had three runners move into scoring position for the remainder of Game One.

Game Two: Fisher 2, Stevens 0

In the nine-inning night cap, the Ducks only managed three hits off Fisher's Marc Iseneker, who threw eight frames for the win with two strikeouts. Smith entered in the ninth for his second save of the day.

Sophomore Greg Jakusik (The Woodlands, Texas) was handed the loss in three innings of work. Jakusik only gave up one hit and one run (unearned) and walked just two while fanning three. Junior Gary Boardman (Staten Island, N.Y.) tossed a solid five innings in relief with five strikeouts. Boardman scattered six hits and allowed one run.

Fisher scored once in the bottom of the first and tacked on another in the bottom of the eighth.

Juniors Marc Calleo (Bayville, N.J.) and Brian Hennelly (Holbrook, N.Y.) and freshman Michael Mule' (Boca Raton, Fla.) each recorded a hit for the Ducks in Game Two.

Stevens' best chance to score came in the second and third innings with two runners on and one out, but double plays in both at bats ended any threat to plate a run.

Two more doubleheaders will be played tomorrow beginning at 12 p.m. The Ducks will close out their regular season on Monday with a pair of CUNYAC games against Lehman College starting at 5 p.m.
