Saints Rally to Defeat W&J, 9-6, to Advance to PAC Championship Game

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) - The second-seeded Thomas More College baseball team rallied from a 6-0 deficit to defeat top-seeded Washington & Jefferson College, 9-6, today (Friday, May 9, 2014) in the winner's bracket final game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship Tournament at Ross Memorial Park in Washington, Pennsylvania.

With the win, the Saints improve to 22-17 and advance to the championship game of the PAC Championship Tournament's championship game tomorrow. The Saints must win one of the two championship games as the first game is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the "if necessary" game at 4 p.m. With the loss, the Presidents fall to 28-13 and will play either No. 3 seed Bethany College or No. 4 seed Waynesburg University in an elimination game at 6 p.m. tonight.

W&J led 6-0 after two and a half innings as it scored one in the first, two in the third and three in the third. The Saints came storming back to plate two in the third and four in the fourth to tie the game at 6-6. Thoma More would then score two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh for the 9-6 come-from-behind win.

Sophomore pitcher Logan Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) earned the win on the mound as he pitched seven innings and gave up six runs (all earned) on 14 hits, while striking out one and walking one. Senior pitcher Andy Roenker (Taylor Mill, Ky./Holy Cross) earned his sixth save of the season as he pitched two shutout innings of relief and only gave up one hit, while striking out two.

Senior first baseman Craig Hyson (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) led the team at the plate as he was three-for-four with a home run, a double, two runs batted-in and two runs scored. Sophomore designated hitter Donovan Pogue (Sharonville, Ohio/St. Xavier) was three-for-four with two runs scored and senior third baseman Travis Miller (Erlanger, Ky./St. Henry) was one-for-three with two RBI and a run scored.
