CLAREMONT, Calif. – After 27 years in the dugout at the helm of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team, head coach Randy Town has stepped down from the position to move into an administrative role within the athletics department, Director of Athletics Mike Sutton announced on Aug. 20. Town who currently serves as the department's physical education director and games management coordinator at CMS football games, will have added administrative responsibilities going forward.
"Randy Town has been a successful coach and physical educator for our program, and I thank him for over 27 years of service to our department and The Colleges," said Sutton, the William B. Arce Professor and George R. Roberts Fellow at Claremont McKenna College. "I look forward to working with Randy in his new administrative assignments as we strive to provide the best physical education and athletics programs for Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd and Scripps Colleges' students."
The search for an interim head coach to guide the CMS baseball program through the 2015 season will begin immediately. A long-term successor for Coach Town is expected to be hired in the spring of 2015.
Coach Town began his head coaching duties at CMS in 1988 and promptly led the Stags to a 28-12 record and a first place finish in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) with a 16-2 conference record. During his CMS career, the Stags registered 16 winning seasons and he tallied 505 wins overall, which is tops all-time in CMS history. He reached the 500-win milestone on April 12, 2014 with a 9-6 win over Redlands.
"After much reflection and 27 memorable seasons as head coach of the CMS baseball program, I have accepted an athletics department administrative position," said Town. "It is not easy leaving my players, coaches and the game of baseball, but this is the right time to take on a new challenge. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have been associated with so many great student-athletes, coaches and mentors during my tenure. I am looking forward to the next chapter in my career."
