Union, N.J. (3/9/15) – Junior Matt Meleo was 3-for-4 with two runs scored as the Kean University baseball team picked up a 6-1 win over SUNY College at Old Westbury on Monday afternoon.

The game was a recent add-on, as the Cougars (5-0) had a last minute cancellation.

Sophomore southpaw Emilio Calderon (2-0) tossed eight strong innings allowing just one run and five hits.  He walked no one and struck out three.

Old Westbury (0-2) got their only run of the afternoon in their first at-bat as Eddie Hernandez laced a one-out single up the middle and with two outs stole second.  He would come around to score on another single up the middle, this time by Dean Sheridan

Kean quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the same inning as Meleo got things going with a single.  He moved around the bases with a groundout and stolen base and tied things up with a Tom McGuckin RBI single.  Later in the frame with the bases loaded, junior Ryan Reitmeyer gave the Cougars the lead for good with a sacrifice fly, scoring McGuckin.

The Cougars added insurance with two more in the fourth as Meleo lofted a sacrifice fly to score Ryan Kelley who reached on a leadoff single.  Anthony Fischetti made it 4-1 on a double steal.

Kean put the game out of reach with two more off the bat of Sal Taormina in the bottom of the eighth, a single up the middle.

Taormina was 2-for-4 while senior Andy Lopez was 3-for-5 with a double.

The Cougars return to action on Tuesday when they host Alvernia University at 3 p.m.
