FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Mitchell College baseball team cruised to a 14-2 victory over Dominican University (Ill.) on Tuesday morning at the Cusic Classic.

Strong starting pitching and a disciplined approach at the plate were key as the Mariners (6-0 overall) stretched their winning streak to six games. Left-hander Bryton Ferris tossed 6.0 scoreless innings in his collegiate debut and struck out eight to earn the win. Mitchell finished with a total of 10 hits on the day—led by a 3-for-3 effort from Evan Peck—and drew 12 walks to fuel its offense.

Mitchell struck for six runs in the third inning and knocked Dominican starter Colin Janison out of the game in the process. Peck plated the first run with a bases-loaded single to short, and from there the Mariners took advantage of a walk and a wild pitch to make it 3-0. Kyle Hartenstein drove in another run with a sac fly to center, and Rafael Garcia later forced in run by wearing a pitch with the bags packed.

Ryan Goodwin, Tyler Pina and Gavin LaLima each contributed RBI singles in the fourth as Mitchell extended the lead to 9-0. The Mariners tacked on three more runs in the fifth as Hartenstein, Pina and Peter McTernan all plated runs. The final two runs came in the sixth as Goodwin added another RBI single and Peck scored on a fielding error.

Dominican (1-2 overall) left runners in scoring position in the second, fourth and sixth innings as Ferris worked out of trouble each time. He scattered seven hits over 6.0 innings and issued only one walk. The Stars finally got on the board in the seventh on a two-out, two-run single by Lucas McKinney off the Mitchell bullpen.

Mitchell will next play a doubleheader against Wilmington College (Ohio) on Wednesday, March 11 at 9:00 a.m.
