Eagles Fall in Extra Innings to Rochester for First UAA Loss

More news about: Emory

A two-out single in the bottom of the tenth from the University of Rochester's Brendan Garry drove in Matt Todd from second base to give the Yellowjackets a 3-2 win over second-ranked Emory University, and hand the Eagles their first loss of the 2015 University Athletic Association Championships.

Todd reached base on a hit-by-pitch with one out, and advanced to second on a groundout by Josh Ludwig.  After an intentional walk was issued to Nolan Schultz, Garry game to the plate and sent a 2-2 pitch into shallow centerfield for the game-winning hit.

The loss comes despite a stellar outing from junior Paul Merolla, who failed to allow an earned run in his seven-and-two-thirds of work, a 114-pitch effort.  Merolla held Rochester to a pair of unearned runs on four hits, striking out three and walking two in the no-decision.

Sophomore Kyle Monk entered the game with two outs in the eighth, getting the final out in the inning and pitching a one-two-three ninth before allowing the game-winning run in the 10th for his first loss of the season.

Emory took the early lead in the contest, scoring an unearned run off Rochester's freshman starter John Ghyzel in the first inning on an RBI single from Wes Peacock.  However, Rochester took advantage of a pair of errors for Emory in the bottom of the second to score two runs of their own, and take a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles evened the score in the top of the fourth on Ben Vizvary's double off the warning track in right centerfield, scoring Jordan Selbach

Emory would have its opportunities to take the lead in the game, putting men in scoring position in six of the next seven innings, but could not force a third run across to jump in front of the Yellowjackets.

Reliever Evan Janifer earned the win for Rochester, holding Emory scoreless over the last three innings to improve to 1-0 on the season.

With the loss, Emory dropped to 10-4 overall and to 4-1 in the conference, remaining half a game ahead of Case Western Reserve University for first place, with the Spartans set to play New York University later in the day.  Rochester improved to 2-3 in UAA action, remaining in fifth-place in the UAA standings.

Emory will look to bounce back on Friday, when the Eagles take on New York University (3-4 overall, 2-2 UAA) at 2:00 pm in Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Florida.
