The Pride Rally Late for 7-5 Victory over Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Greensboro College baseball team plated three runs in the ninth to finish off a 7-5 comeback over Lynchburg College Thursday afternoon in the home opener from Fox Field.

Greensboro jumped on the board first, plating two runs in the top of the first inning on RBI base hits from Andrew Toney and Kyle Willard.

LC answered in the bottom half of the frame, loading the bases with no outs on a walk, hit by pitch and fielders' choice resulting in a throwing error by the catcher trying to gun down Drew Taylor at third base. Mitch Choros almost escaped the jam, inducing a groundout to third and a pop-up to keep Lynchburg off the board. Rob Tomasulo made sure Lynchburg scored with two outs, lacing a single back up the middle to score two and tie up the game.

Willard collected another RBI in the third to put The Pride back out in front once more, but Jonathan Munn singled to left in the bottom of the fifth to knot the contest for the second time.

Trailing 4-3, Lynchburg took its first lead in the sixth when pinch hitter Joe Tomasulo was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Will Hylton, already 1-for-1 with a walk on the day, tripled into the left-center field gap to chase Tomasulo in from third. Ryan Katona grounded out to the shortstop that was playing normal depth, allowing Hylton to come home for the 5-4 lead.

Greensboro started the comeback in the ninth when Jordan Powell doubled to left-center, moving to third on a groundout to second. A sharply hit ball by Willard that ricocheted off Parsons and into left field brought home the tying run for GC. A walk and subsequent single loaded the bases with the go-ahead run 90 feet from scoring. Andrew Ray provided the game-winning single before a Jay Cumbo sacrifice fly gave The Pride the two-run edge.

Michael Day worked another great game for the Hornets, throwing four innings of one-run relief, walking three and allowing four hits while striking out four. Hylton, Katona and Rob Tomasulo had two hits each for LC.

Powell and Ray had three hits apiece for Greensboro (6-7) while Willard ended the day with three RBI.

Lynchburg (3-8/0-0 ODAC) will begin Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on the road Saturday with a noon doubleheader slated against Emory & Henry College (2-8/0-1).
