Close Shave But Gorloks Beat #10 UW-Stevens Point

More news about: Webster

Beating its third ranked team in four days, the Webster University baseball team downed #10 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 3-2, in 11 innings at Auburndale, FL.  The Gorloks utilized a stellar long relief effort from game winner Chris Jansen, and a most unusual double play to save the game in the 11th.

Since dropping out of the top 25 in this week's d3baseball.com poll, the Gorloks have knocked off the #10, #14 (Rhodes College),  and #16 (Marietta College) ranked schools in a four day span.

Chris Jansen  (SR, Cicero, IL/Bishop Chatard HS) bailed Webster out of a jam in the fifth inning and wound up going 5 1/3 innings in relief, giving up no runs, five hits, one intentional walk, and striking out three.  After Webster had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the 11th, Jansen got in a jam of his own with a pair of leadoff singles to put Pointer runners at first and third with none out.

Trey Tigart (SO, Sikeston, MO/Sikeston HS) was called in from the Webster pen.   Tigart struck out the first batter he faced swinging, and the runner at first was called out trying to steal on batter's interference for the second out.  Tigart got the next batter on a ground out to first and Webster had climbed out of a big hole in a most unusual way.

The Gorloks had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the 11th.  Kyle Uhrich (SO, St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves HS) walked, Jeff Kammer (SR, Chesterfield, MO/Lafayette HS) singled, and Jake Celleghin (JR, Westfield, IN/Westfield HS) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Ty Hoffhines (JR, Depew, NY/Lancaster HS) lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Uhrich.

Stephens Point had a chance to win it in the 10th.  The Pointers had a leadoff single moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  After an intentional walk, Jansen got back to back fly outs to left to end the threat.  Jansen had retired seven straight before allowing the single to start the inning.

Down 1-0 in the fourth, Webster tied it up when Uhrich singled and Kammer doubled him home to make it 1-1.   Stevens Point regained the lead, 2-1, in its half of the fourth, and were threatening in the fifth.  A one out double and hit batter by starter C. J. Lee (SO, Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley HS) prompted the call for southpaw Jansen to face the lefty batter.   Jansen got a groundout to end the inning.

Webster tied it up once more in the top of the sixth.  Charlie Gandolfi (SR, Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) led off with a double and Blake Thomas (JR, Troy, IL/Triad HS) singled him home to even it up at 2-2.  The score remained that way until the 11th.

Jansen is 1-0 on the season and lowered his earned run average to 0.96 with his outing.  Lee went 4 2/3 innings, gave up four hits and two runs, one earned.  He walked two and struck out two.  Tigart earned his second save of the season with his heroics.

Kammer was 2-5, with a double, and Alec Bahnick (SO, Owensboro, KY/Owensboro Catholic HS0 was 2-5 with a stolen base.  Thomas was 1-4, with an RBI and a walk.  Gandolfi was 1-5, with a double and a run.

Stevens Point was 32-13 in 2014, advancing to the NCAA III championships, and losing in their regional championship game to the previous year's World Series winner, Linfield College (OR).

Webster has a four-game winning streak and is 5-4 on the season.  The Gorloks finish their Florida trip with another game against a ranked opponent, #24 Eastern Connecticut State University on March 13 in Auburndale.
