Hope Baseball Tops Western New England On Walkoff Single In 10th

Senior Devin Schaefers of Lake Forest, California (El Toro HS), delivered a two-out, walkoff single to lift the Hope College baseball team to a 6-5 win against Western New England in 10 innings on Friday in Winter Haven, Florida.

Schaefers knocked home pinch runner Tyler Gulick from third base. Gulick, a freshman from East Lansing, Michigan (East Lansing HS), ran for junior Nick Glowacki of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS), after Glowacki led off with a double.

The season opener for the Flying Dutchmen was originally scheduled to go nine innings.

Hope outhit Western New England 13-5 as Schaefers and junior Ryan Konkle of Marshall, Michigan (Marshall HS) each collected three.

Konkle contributed an RBI double in a two-run fifth that snapped a 1-1 tie and a run-scoring single in the seventh.

Junior Brady VanderWeele of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Parchment HS), also had a RBI double in the fifth.

Schaefers also came through with a run-scoring single in the sixth.

A RBI single from freshman Landon Brower of Holland, Michigan (Holland Christian HS), in the fourth opened the scoring for Hope.

Winning pitcher Matt Glowacki of Goodrich, Michigan (Goodrich HS), tossed two innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts.

Hope returns to action on Saturday with an 11 a.m. game against Vassar in Winter Haven, Florida.
