PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Heidelberg University baseball team won the first of two games against New Paltz State on Saturday before the second was suspended in the bottom of the eighth inning. In the opener, the Student Princes came out hot and buried the Hawks, winning by a final score of 13-3.

After the two teams traded runs in the first inning, the Berg (7-0) scored four in both the second and third innings to pull away early. Both Adam Hershberger and Christian Verde recorded two-run hits during that stretch that built the lead for Heidelberg.

Junior Kyle Fluharty, in his second start of the season, put together a solid performance, going 7.2 innings on the mound to earn his first victory of the year. All-in-all, Fluharty finished giving up eight hits, three runs, only two earned while striking out six.

Ben Sniezek finished off the game with 1.1 innings of solid relief, giving up just one hit while striking out a pair.

Offensively, Hershberger and Verde led the hit parade for Heidelberg as each recorded three in the game. Hershberger had a team-high four RBI while Verde drove in a pair.

Continuing on the trend set thus far on the season, the Berg stole six bases in the game, led by T.J. Harkness, who swiped a pair.

In game two, Heidelberg broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the 8th inning with two runs, but in the bottom of the frame the lights at the field went off at midnight, causing a delay that turned into the suspension of the game. It has yet to be determined when the game will be finished if possible.

Heidelberg will travel to Fort Myers, Florida, tomorrow to face Johns Hopkins as a part of the Gene Cusic Classic. That game is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
