Baseball Splits Doubleheader vs. Medaille to Open Season in Florida

Lakeland, FL – The SUNY Canton baseball team won the nightcap of a doubleheader against Medaille College, 5-2, to earn a split as it opened the 2015 season on Saturday in Florida. The Roos (1-1) dropped the opening game 13-2 in the first contest for both teams this year.
 
Three Roos had multi-hit games in the nightcap including a pair of perfect performances from the plate as both Christian Nazario-Cruz(Naguabo, Puerto Rico) and Brandon Welch (Constable, NY) went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate. Cruz finished game two with a pair of doubles and an RBI, while Jeremy Baez (Bronx, NY) went 2-for-4 from the plate driving in the other two runs.

Travis Bigelow (Ottawa, ON) put up a strong effort on the mound throwing a complete game giving up just two hits and one earned run. The sophomore struck out seven batters, while surrendering four walks. He was effective keeping the ball low as he induced 12 groundouts in the contest.
 
In the first game of the day SUNY Canton fell behind 6-0 after three innings. The Roos scored their first run of the season in the fourth inning when Chris Roenbeck (Plattsburgh, NY) plated Chris Jones (Deerfield Beach, FL) on a groundout but the Roos were unable to make the comeback in the 13-2 defeat. John Mancini (Scotia, NY) suffered the loss on the hill.
