EC Opens HCAC Slate Against Anderson

More news about: Earlham

RICHMOND, Ind. — An unearned run was the difference on Friday as the Earlham College baseball team fell 8-7 to Anderson University in 11 innings in Randal R. Sadler Stadium.

The Ravens (8-3, 1-0) scored the game-winner in the top of the 11th on an infield hit in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener.

Earlham spent the afternoon answering every rally Anderson put together except the final run as the Quakers had their winning streak snapped at eight games.

Both teams picked up unearned runs in the second inning with the Quakers scoring on a ground out by Devin Spurgon.

The Ravens went on top 4-1 in the fourth before Earlham tied the game with three more runs. Ethan Bailey knocked in the first run with an infield single. Eric Elkus scored on a passed ball and Brennan Laird made it 4-4 with a bases loaded walk.

Anderson scored three times in the seventh and the Quakers responded again. Elkus had a RBI single before Josh Parr and Spurgon scored on an error.

The Quakers left the bases loaded in the ninth and had a runner at second base in the 10th, but couldn't push a run across the plate.

Parr led the Quakers with four hits, while Elkus added three. Brandon Smalling had a pair of hits.

Nate Hube started on the mound for the Quakers and worked six innings. He gave up six runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.

Garrett York tossed the next three frames and surrendered a run on four hits with three strikeouts.

Matt Brankle (1-2) was tagged with the loss after pitching two innings and giving up the unearned run on a hit with three strikeouts.

Earlham (10-2, 0-1) and Anderson finish the HCAC series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
