#16 Bobcats Pound 28 Hits in DH Sweep

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The 16th-rank Frostburg State baseball team pounded out 28 total hits in its doubleheader sweep of Capital Athletic Conference opponent, Mary Washington, Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats took the first game 13-6 before finishing out the sweep with a 13-3 victory in the night cap.


Frostburg (15-2, 7-1 CAC) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. After the pair of games today, the Bobcats are a perfect 9-0 when scoring in the first inning and are outscoring opponents 24-2 in the first inning. The Bobcats capitalized on each of the Eagle errors as only three of their 13 runs in the game were earned.

With two outs and two on, senior Ricky Brady dropped a ball into centerfield that was too much for the UMW centerfielder to handle and allowed senior Nick Walker and Zach Weiss to cross the plate. Brady came around to score on junior Zach Keeler's single to push the Bobcat lead to 3-0. After senior Lane Farmer singled to left to put two on, junior Jamaal Windom reached on the UMW centerfielder's second error of the game to score Keeler and Farmer. Senior Nick McElfish drove in the final run of the inning with a single to shortstop to bring home Windom.

The Eagles (10-4, 2-4 CAC) scored a run in the first inning to cut the lead to 6-1 and was the first team to score in the first against the Bobcats this season. Justin Kime scored on Jono Haught's double to left field.

Frostburg posted a run in the second and third and the fifth and sixth to take a 10-2 lead. Each team put up three runs in the seventh as the Bobcats took a 13-5 lead. The Eagles scored the final run of the ball game in the bottom of the ninth to bring the score to its final, 13-6.

The Eagles committed seven errors while the Bobcats posted 15 hits in the game. Senior Bennett Schiltz earned his fifth win of the year after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three.

Frostburg once again jumped out to an early lead in the second game after posting four runs in the first. After the Eagles scored in the first, Frostburg put up four more runs in the second to break the game open, 8-1. The Bobcats and Eagles traded runs in the fourth before Frostburg closed out the game with four runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth.

McElfish scored on a groundout by Brady for the ninth run of the game in the seventh to give FSU a 9-3 lead. With the bases loaded and one away, Castro sent a ball to left field to score freshman Greg Schneider on the sac fly.

Frostburg plated its final two runs of the game in the ninth to bring the score to its final, 13-3. With the bases loaded and one out, Farmer reached on a fielding error by the UMW centerfielder and brought home Brady and Weiss for the final two runs.

Senior Clayton Freimuth earned his fourth win on the mound for Frostburg, going 7.0 innings, allowing just three runs, two earned, on eight hits and one walk while striking out eight.

Farmer finished the doubleheader with eight RBI, including seven in the second game after going 5-for-11 between the two games.


Frostburg returns to action when the Bobcats travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Gallaudet at 1:00 pm tomorrow.
