Keystone Sweeps St. John Fisher in Non-Conference Doubleheader

La Plume, PA – Keystone College's pitching staff combined to strike out 19 batters to lead the Giants to a doubleheader sweep of visiting St. John Fisher College in non-conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon.  The Giants improve to 9-4 on the season by claiming both games of their home-opening twin bill while the Cardinals fall to 6-10 on the spring.
 
In Sunday's opener, Keystone took a 2-0 after the first inning by manufacturing a pair of runs without a hit.  Dylan Corl (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch ) led the inning off with a walk, stealing second, and coming around to score on a wild pitch.  Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel), who reached on the wild pitch that scored Corl, scored the Giants' second run on an RBI groundout by Kevin Luciano (Everett, MA/Cambridge Rindge and Latin School).
 
St. John Fisher got a run back in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by Scott Eisenmenger, but Keystone answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to claim a 4-2 lead.  Rojas scored his second run of the game on a double to the gap in left-center by Nate Ross (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva) before Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) drove in Ross with a base hit just inside the third base line. 
 
The Cardinals narrowed their deficit to 4-3 in the visitor's fourth when Joe Simmons hit an infield single with the bases loaded, but Chris Bzozowski (Westampton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) restored Keystone's two-run advantage by lacing a leadoff home run over the wall in left-center in bottom of the sixth inning before Anthony Muccio (Tarrytown, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) came home on a throwing error by the visitors to give the Giants a 6-3 lead.
 
Herceg singled up the middle to score Luciano in the home seventh to make it a 7-3 game before the Cardinals scored a run on a Shane Barley sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to close out the scoring. 
 
Keystone starting pitcher Felix Baez (San Juan, PR/Colegio Presbiteriano) (1-0) earned his first win of the season after allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out nine batters in 7.1 innings of work.  Jake Granteed (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) retired the only two batters he faced in the eighth inning including one via the strikeout before turning the ball over to Charles Morreale (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence), who struck out one batter while closing out the game in the ninth inning.
 
Herceg and Luciano led Keystone with two hits apiece with Herceg collecting a pair of RBIs.  Rojas scored a pair of runs in the victory.   
 
St. John Fisher starter Terry Engels (2-3) suffered the loss after allowing four runs in 2.2 innings on the mound.  Kevin Berge yielding a pair of runs in 3.1 innings on the hill while Josh Amann surrendered one run in the final two innings for the Cardinals, who got hits from six different players in the game one loss.
 
In Sunday's nightcap, St. John Fisher took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI triple to the gap in right center off the bat of Cody Wiktorski that plated Calvin Woolhister.  Keystone answered in the home half of the frame though as Luciano ripped a home run deep over the fence in left-center.
 
Luciano drove in Keystone's second run in the bottom of the fourth inning with a base hit that scored Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) before coming home on a single to right from Eduardo Familia (Bronx, NY/Collegio Utesianode Estudios Integrados).  The Giants pushed their lead to 4-1 in the home fifth as Reyes drove in Julian Lanfranco (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) with a single to right field.
 
St. John Fisher got a run back in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single by Eisenmenger, but Keystone got the run back in the bottom half of the inning when Bzozowski scored on a wild pitch to make it a 5-2 game.
 
The Cardinals again made it a two-run contest in the visitor's seventh on a two-out, pinch hit RBI single by Tom Kline, but that would mark the ending of the scoring for either team.
 
Giants' starter James Dunning (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) improve to 2-0 on the season after allowing a pair of earned runs on six hits to go along with six strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Jesse Arnold (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) tossed a perfect eighth inning with one strikeout while Morreale notched his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in which he fanned one batter.
 
Luciano powered Keystone's offense with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored while Reyes and Familia added a pair of hits apiece.
 
Cardinals' starting pitcher Marc Iseneker (0-3) suffered the loss after yielding five runs on nine hits while picking up four K's in six innings of work.  Colton Fergus and Loukas Brigham pitched a perfect inning apiece to close out the game on the mound for St. John Fisher, who was paced by Wiktorski's two hits in the nightcap.
 
Keystone will open Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Monday afternoon with a home doubleheader against local rival Marywood University.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Christy Mathewson Field in La Plume.
