Baseball splits at Rhodes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Berry College (15-12-1, 6-5-1 SAA) split a double-header matchup against Southern Athletic Associate foe, Rhodes College (22-6, 9-2 SAA). Rhodes--ranked ninth in the current national poll--took the first game, 1-0, but Berry rebounded and won the nightcap, 9-4.

In the first game, it was a pitching duel between the Lynx and the Vikings. Ryan O'Connell (1-3) pitched a complete game allowing one run in his eighth inning. He surrendered five hits while striking out four.

The Vikings could only muster up one hit--which was from Alfred Francis--in the fourth inning.

Rhodes sent Blake Galuben (4-2) to the mound. He went all nine innings without giving up a run and only one hit. He struck out six BC batters while walking two.

For the second game, Berry jumped out to an early lead by going up 9-0 after the second inning.

Offensively, Alex McGill led the team by going 2-for-3 with a RBI and scoring twice. Devin Skelton also matched with a pair of hits along with a RBI. Doug Heath led the team in RBIs by driving in two in the top of the second inning.

TJ Montgomery started the game and went five strong innings. He allowed one run off five hits while striking out five batters. He improved his record to 3-2 on the season.

For Rhodes, Ryan Olive led the team by going 2-for-4 with a single and a home run. Olive knocked a three run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Vikings will face Covenant at William R. Bowdoin Field on March 31 at 6 p.m.
