Union, N.J. (3/30/15) – Senior Casey Carothers tossed a complete game while junior Sal Taormina drove in four as the Kean University baseball team engineered a 7-1 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Monday.

The non-conference matchup was rescheduled three times after weather postponements in February and March.  Kean improved to 16-4 at the halfway point of the season while Stevens falls to 8-9.

The #6/7 Cougars put up a three spot in their first at-bat as Taormina provided the big, one out, two RBI double into the gap.  Designated hitter Zachary De Leon executed a hit-and-run and drove in another with the single.

Kean added a single run in the second as Tyler Heisch lined a two out single up the middle, scoring catcher D.J. Ross who reached on a leadoff walk.

The Ducks erased the shutout in the sixth with a sac fly from Zeph Walters, scoring Gregg Nickels who broke up a streak of 13 consecutive batters retired by Carothers, with a single to start the inning.

Taormina added insurance in the seventh with a bases loaded single, scoring two.  Junior Chris Amato ended the scoring with an RBI bunt in the eighth.

Carothers (1-0) allowed two walks and four hits in his first complete game at Kean.  He struck out seven with his first win at Kean as well.

Taormina, Heisch and De Leon all finished with two hits in the win.

The Cougars continue non-conference action on Tuesday when they travel to the College of Staten Island for a 4 p.m. matchup.
