Vikings Win Third Straight

Salem, Mass. â€" Salem State won their third straight on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Roger Williams 8-2 at the Central Campus Baseball Field. The Vikings improve to 8-5 on the year while the Hawks slip to 2-12.

Mike Davis (Peabody, MA) had a big day at the plate for Salem State, going 3-for-4 with a double, and two runs batted in. Roger Williams struck first in the opening inning as Sean Gaffney (Simsbury, CT) crossed home plate on a Reid Nelson (Wallingford, CT) double. Salem State threatened in their half, but stranded two runners.

Jimmy Smith (Walpole, MA) came on to pitch for the Hawks in the 3rd inning, replacing Troy DeLeon (East Hampton, CT), who started the game, and went two innings giving up, two hits, two strikeouts, and no runs.

Andrew DeLoury (Andover, MA) tied it up for the Vikings when he scored on a sac-fly by Jose Cedano (Lawrence, MA) in the third.

Jamie Timothy (Cohasset, MA) hit a sac-fly to right field to give Roger Williams a 2-1 lead in the 4th inning, but DeLoury answered with a two-run triple that put the Vikings ahead. Salem State would add another run as DeLoury would score on a wild pitch to make it 5-2 before Eric Proulx (Charlton, MA) came on to replace Smith for the Hawks.

In the fifth, Davis hit a single that squeaked through the infield, and drove in two runs to increase the lead to 7-2. Kaelen Rayner (Westerly, RI) came on for Proulx who pitched 1.2 innings and allowed four walks and two runs.

Tim Woods (Wilmington, MA) came on in relief for the Vikings, replacing starter Andrew McLaughlin (Peabody, MA), who pitched six innings and gave up six hits, two runs, while striking out five to earn his second win of the year. Brendan Telfer (Avon, CT) finished the game pitching for Roger Williams while Matt Turmenne (Lynn,. MA) pitched a scoreless ninth for Salem State.

The Vikings will play at home tomorrow at 3:30 PM against Gordon College. The Hawks play on their home field on Thursday at 3:30 PM against Babson College.
