OBERLIN, Ohio -- Behind some strong pitching, the Hiram College baseball team posted a doubleheader sweep of Oberlin on Saturday afternoon.

The Terriers improve to 7-14 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC East, while the Yeomen fall to 9-14, 0-2.

Both games were moved to Oberlin due to field conditions at Hiram. The Terriers were still the home team in both contests.

In the opening game, Hiram got a dominating performance from senior Nate Weiss (Warren, Mich./University Liggett). He fired a complete game, giving up just one hit and striking out nine batters to pick up his second win of the season.

The Terriers jumped on the board in the first inning, getting a RBI single from senior Jeff Segal (West Bloomfield, Mich./North Farmington) and a RBI groundout junior Trevor Foster(Warren/Champion).

Hiram took advantage of some Oberlin miscues in the second and plated an unearned run to push its lead to 3-0.

The Terriers blew the game open in the third inning, scoring three more runs. Freshman Phil Ward (Garfield Heights) hit a RBI double to score Segal and open the scoring in the inning.

A fielding error would allow Ward to score a few batters later and senior Ron DeAmicis (Austintown/Fitch) had a RBI single to close out the scoring in the inning.

Hiram tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning on a 2-RBI single from senior Mark Leone (Boardman) to cap off the 8-0 win.

Segal and Ward paced the Terriers in the opening game, each going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.

In the second game, senior J.T. Taylor (Niles/Niles McKinley) continued the solid pitching for Hiram, going six innings, giving up two runs and striking out three, to improve to 2-2 on the year.

The teams played three and a half scoreless innings before sophomore Eric Martin (Brookfield) doubled home DeAmicis to put Hiram up 1-0.

The Terriers added two more runs in the fifth on a RBI single from Ward and a RBI double by DeAmicis.

Oberlin got on the board in the sixth with two runs, but Hiram came right back with a run in the bottom of the frame on a RBI double from Segal that scored senior Jaren Bell(Rochester, N.Y./Brighton).

Segal added an insurance run for Hiram in the eighth when he doubled home sophomore Kyle Torok (Kirtland).

The Yeomen would bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Bell induced a groundout to end the ballgame and give the Terriers the 5-2 victory. The save was the second of the season for Bell.

Segal led Hiram, going 3-for-4 with two RBI's.

These two teams will meet again on Monday in a doubleheader at Fishel Field that is set to begin at noon.
