The Albion College baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader with Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Kalamazoo College with a 2-0 loss in game one and an 8-6 win in game two. The teams split the four game series with two wins and two losses apiece.
Game One
Starting pitcher Nate Brubaker threw an outstanding game for the Britons, giving up just one run in 27 batters faced. Faced with bases loaded and just one out in the top of the fifth, Brubaker was able to get out of the jam to keep Albion's chances alive. After giving up one run in the sixth, Brubaker was relieved by Steven Scott who pitched well but also gave up a run. The offense, however, wasn't able to come through.
"We threw well and competed well," Head Coach Scott Carden said. "But we had to get things going offensively. We needed to execute."
Michael Fischbach and Justin Dennis were each 2-for-3 in the game while Kyle Kowal and Chase Carpenter each had doubles. The Britons had just as many hits as Kalamazoo — eight — but couldn't find a way to drive a run home. The Britons stranded five runners in scoring position.
"We didn't get the key hits when we needed them," Carden said.
Game Two
Jack Wyman got the start as Albion used a thrilling sixth inning to clinch the win. Wyman had an impressive nine strikeouts while also batting 1-for-3 including an RBI double to spur Albion's come-from-behind victory.
"Jack Wyman is a talented kid," Carden said about the first-year student-athlete from Bloomfield Hills. "He competes like crazy. He locks in at the plate and always gives us a chance to win on the mound."
Steven Marowski and Fischbach made big plays in game two combining for six of Albion's eight runs. Fischbach got on base twice in three appearances at the plate with a double and a base on balls. Marowski drove in three runs in his three plate appearances.
"Fischbach and Marowksi were outstanding today," said Carden. "Fischbach is doing what he does — competing."
Aside from Wyman, Fischbach, and Marowski, the Britons also got production from Mitch Lasceski and Chase Carpenter, who added RBI.
"In game two we turned around and executed well," said Carden.
The Britons return to the field Thursday as they travel to Calvin College for an MIAA doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
