Union, N.J. (4/6/15) – Junior Ryan Kelley drove in two while classmate Anthony Fischetti tallied three hits as the #5 Kean University baseball team shutdown Moravian College, 6-1, Monday afternoon in a rescheduled non-conference matchup.
Fischetti scored a run and swiped three bases as Kean reached the 20 win mark (20-6) for the 16th straight season.
Kean got all the runs they would need in their half of the third as a single, throwing error and bunt single loaded the bases with no outs. Sophomore Scott Durkin drew a bases loaded walk to drive in the game's first run, followed by back-to-back groundouts from Kelley and Sal Taormina to push the advantage out to three.
The Greyhounds (10-9) had their chances, putting at least one runner in scoring position for the first six innings. In every inning, but the fifth, the Cougars were able to work out of the jam. In that fifth inning, trailing 3-0, Moravian used a wild pitch to erase the shutout. Anthony Gaetaniello crossed the plate after reaching on a fielder's choice.
The Cougars added insurance with a single run in the seventh on an RBI single from Kelley and two more in the eighth on a sac fly from Ryan Reitmeyer and an infield single from D.J. Ross.
Senior Casey Carothers got the win for Kean. Carothers (2-0) allowed one run and five hits in five and a third innings. He struck out four and walked five. Southpaw Richie Ferguson earned his second save of the year tossing three and two thirds innings of shutout ball with three strikeouts.
Ross finished with two hits, including the only extra base hit of the day with a double. For the Greyhounds, Alex Bull and Colin Case each recorded two hits as their team stranded 12 runners on the afternoon.
Kean returns to NJAC action on Thursday when they host New Jersey City University at 3:30 p.m.
