Murray and Brooks Lead RIC Over Falcons, 4-1

Fitchburg, Mass.-Freshman pitcher Jake Murray (Middletown, RI) allowed just one run on five hits, while senior reliever Joe Brooks (Pawtucket, RI) picked up his second save, as Rhode Island College downed Fitchburg State, 4-1, at Riccards Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Murray (2-1) went five innings and struck out three for the Anchormen (14-7), while Brooks allowed just one hit and struck out two in two innings of work. Senior righty William Dawson (Narragansett, RI) and junior Kory Lawrence (Woonsocket, RI) did not allow a run in an inning of relief apiece.

The Anchormen broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning when junior left fielder Joe Yankee (Lincoln, RI) reached first on an error by the second baseman that scored freshman center fielder Brad Douglas (Wakefield, RI) to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Fitchburg State (11-10) would answer in their following at-bats when catcher Sam Brown with a single to second base that scored right fielder Mike St. John to bring the game to a 1-1 deadlock.

Sophomore catcher Tyler Rains (North Kingstown, RI) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home senior right fielder Patrick Rogers (Waterford, CT) that gave RIC their second lead, 2-1, of the game in the sixth. The Anchormen added to their advantage the following inning on a junior designated hitter Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA) RBI single to left field and a sacrifice RBI fly by Rogers on a diving catch by Steve McFadden in left field that scored Yankee from second.

FSU's Tom Gammell had a solid outing on the mound despite suffering the loss (1-1), throwing six innings with one earned run and five strikeouts.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Curry tomorrow afternoon (3:30 p.m.).
