Giants and Knights Split CSAC Doubleheader

More news about: Keystone

Aston, PA – Keystone College rebounded from a 3-2 setback in the opening game of Saturday afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Neumann University to score a 5-2 win in the nightcap to salvage a split on the day while taking two of three games from the Knights in the regular season series.  The Giants now sit at 19-11 overall this spring and are 5-5 in conference play while Knights see their record move to12-8 overall and 7-5 in the CSAC.

Saturday's opener was a pitching dual between Keystone's James Dunning (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) and Neumann's Kristian DeLuzio that remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when the Giants took a 2-0 lead with a pair of two-out runs.  Cody Darley (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) scored on an infield single by Dylan Corl (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch ) before Julian Lanfranco (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) came home after Corl was caught stealing.

The Knights answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of three Keystone errors in the inning.  Jarad Carney scored Neumann's first run on a fielding error on a ball hit by Kye Williams before Matt Sheneman crossed home with the tying run on a throwing error by the Giants.  A bases-loaded walke then forced Williams home with what proved to be the winning run.

DeLuzio (4-2) tossed a complete game, two-hitter to earn the win on the mound for Neumann, allowing a pair of unearned runs while striking out seven batters.

Dunning (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing three runs – all unearned, on fours and four walks in 5.2 innings.  The senior right-hander struck out a season-high 10 batters on the day before turning the ball over to Austin Barefoot (Alexandria, PA/Tyrone Area), who got the final out of the sixth inning.

Corl and Lanfranco accounted for Keystone's only two hits in the game one loss, both singles, while Kevin Luciano (Everett, MA/Cambridge Rindge and Latin School) had his remarkable, 28-game hitting streak come to an end.

In the second game, Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) gave Keystone a 1-0 lead in their first at-bats of the game with a solo home run – his third of the season – to left field.  The Giants then used a three-run second inning to open up a 4-0 advantage as Joe Angelucci (Commack, NY/Commack) came home on a Lanfranco single before Rojas and Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) both drew a bases-loaded walks.

Keystone pushed their advantage to five runs in the visitor's fifth when Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) singled to center to plate Rojas.

Neumann attempted to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh and got two runs as Eric Bergman scored on an RBI groundout by Buddy Elgin before Carney hit an RBI single, but Jake Granteed (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) came on in relief of Darren Lauer (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) to notch his first save of the season by leaving the potential tying run at the plate.

Lauer earned the win to level his record at 3-3 on the season after allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six batters in 6.2 innings of work before handing the ball off to Granteed, who retired the only batter he faced to pick up the save.

Rojas went 2-2 with two walks, two RBIs, and two runs scored to power Keystone's offense in the game two victory.

Tyler Thomas (1-2) suffered the loss on the mound for Neumann after allowing four runs on four hits and two walks in 1.2 innings.  Bobby Sefick pitched the final 5.1 innings for the Knights and surrendered on run on two hits to go along with a pair of Ks.

Six different players collected hits for the hosts in the nightcap as both teams had six hits in the contest.

Keystone will be right back in action on Sunday afternoon with a CSAC game against Cairn University starting at 1:00 p.m. at Christy Mathewson Field in La Plume.  The Giants and Highlanders split a doubleheader on April 6th.
