Dutchmen top Skidmore, 8-4, in Mid-Week Action

More news about: Union

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - After a four-run Skidmore first, the Union College Dutchmen responded with eight unanswered runs to defeat the Thoroughbreds, 8-4, on Thursday afternoon in a game that did not count towards the Liberty League standings.

Eric Egan went 1-for-3, driving in a team-high three runs and stealing a season-high three bases. The junior OF has now recorded a base hit in 21 of the last 22 games. Jake Fishman extended his hitting streak to eight games, finishing 2-for-2 at the plate. It was his 16th multi-hit game of the season and increased his Division III leading batting average to .543.

The first six batters reached base off Union starter Nick Williams in the bottom of the first as Skidmore staked claim to a 4-0 lead after one. However, that was all the offense the Thoroughbreds would score as Williams settled down to put up five scoreless innings to earn his first career victory. Williams gave up six hits, just three from the second inning on, four runs (3 ER) to go along with two walks and two strikeouts in six innings on the mound.

The Dutchmen tied the game with a four-run third inning. Anders Goetz scampered around to score from second after an error by the Skidmore catcher on a Jamie Faber sacrifice. With runners on the corners and no outs, Egan deposited his second home run of the season over the left field fence to knot the game up at 4-4.

Union would take the lead in the fourth as Andy Labeck drove in Zack Twitchell for the go-ahead run on a groundout to short.

The Garnet and White tacked on two more in the fifth. After a double steal from Egan and Fishman, Union received back-to-back RBIs from Jake Vesling and CJ Worley to move in front 7-4. The Dutchmen provided the final run of the game in the sixth as Matt Drum came in to score from third as Egan stole second and the Skidmore catcher's throw sailed into center.

Union will return to the diamond this weekend with a pivotal four-game set at league-foe RIT. First pitch is scheduled for noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
