Rose-Hulman Earns Series Sweep at Bluffton

BLUFFTON, Ohio -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology relied on a pair of RBI singles with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Fightin' Engineers past Bluffton University 2-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball action on Sunday.

With the win, Rose-Hulman retains the outright lead in the conference standings entering the final week of the regular season.  The Fightin' Engineers travel to Anderson for a single game on Tuesday and Mount St. Joseph for a three-game series on May 2-3.

Bluffton held a 1-0 lead entering the top of the ninth inning, when Caleb Kissel led off the frame with a single.  After a sacrifice bunt, Donnie Waters received an intentional walk to put runners on first and second in the top of the ninth.

Bluffton went to the bullpen after 8.1 scoreless innings from Jaylen Von Sossan, and with two outs in the ninth, Rose-Hulman senior Josh Hoeing tied the game with an RBI single to score pinch runner Evan Witsken.  Junior Hazen Hamather then provided the eventual game winning hit with an RBI double to score Waters.

Waters led the offense with a 3-3 performance that included a double to cap a weekend that featured 10 hits over the three-game series.  Junior Zach Hull also had three hits, including a double, to provide offensive support.

Junior Andrew Stull tossed a strong 8.2 innings to move to 3-5 on the season.  Stull allowed just four singles and one earned run with four strikeouts in the victory.  Junior Alec McNally picked up the final out for his sixth save of the year and his second in as many days.

Von Sossan took the hard-luck loss after tossing 8.1 strong innings and scattering eight hits.  T.J. Devore led Bluffton's offense with an RBI single.

Rose-Hulman improved to 22-12 overall and 15-7 in conference play entering the final week of the regular season.  Bluffton stands 20-16 overall and 13-10 in league games.  The Fightin' Engineers travel to Anderson on Tuesday in another conference matchup.
