OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team picked up its first Skyline Conference win of the season as the team doubled up the Old Westbury Panthers in game two of its league doubleheader by a 4-2 score. Old Westbury notched a win in the opener by a 7-4 mark.

In game two, freshman Tyler Stuart (Palm Coast, Fla./Matanzas) spun a gem as he tossed seven innings and allowed just one earned run on three hits and three walks, while striking out four. His final strikeout of the night was the last batter of the game, as Stuart needed 95 pitches for his first career complete game.

Offensively the team was led by senior shortstop Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who had three hits to go along with two walks and also drove in a pair, while scoring one run. Sophomore Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) had two RBIs on the day, while senior Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach) and sophomore Chris Stewart (Bethpage, N.Y./Chaminade) also picked up RBIs on the day as well.

In the team's win, Longo got the top of the second started with a one out walk. Longo then reached second on a failed pickoff attempt. With the next batter at the plate, Longo stole third then came in to score as the catcher's throw into leftfield.

Old Westbury responded in the bottom of the inning as two of the first three batters reached, and advanced to scoring position on a balk. An RBI groundout evened the game at two as the game progressed to the third inning.

Stuart struck out a pair in the third inning to send his team to bat in the top of the fourth. Senior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) led off the frame with a single in the hole to short, Longo then moved him over into scoring position with a bunt, followed by junior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) reaching on a single to move Sollin to third.

Doerbecker was up next and singled up the middle to chase Sollin home to give Maritime a 2-1 advantage. However, the Panthers evened the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to tie the game once again.

In the top of the fifth, freshman Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) started things off with a one out single, then promptly stole second base. Two batters later, McLaughlin singled deep in the hole to second base allowing Deddo to scamper home with the go-ahead run.

In the top of the sixth, Maritime tacked on an insurance run as Doerbecker walked on a 3-2 pitch to lead off the inning. Doerbecker then stole second, and two batters later Deddo walked on a 3-2 pitch that went to the backstop allowing Doerbecker to move up to third.

With Stewart at the plate with two down, Deddo stole second allowing Doerbecker to break for the plate and was able to swipe home to give the Privateers a 4-2 lead going to the bottom of the sixth.

Having retired the last four he faced, Stuart continued to roll with a pair of groundouts, followed by a single to right center. However as the runner tried to stretch the play into a double, Monahan unleashed a bullet to the bag and Longo applied the tag for the third out of the sixth. Stuart retired the side with ease in the seventh to seal the win.

In the opener, Maritime jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as junior Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown)walked and moved up to second and third on a passed ball and stolen base. Deddo followed with a walk, McLaughlin was up next and a defensive miscue allowed Woodburn to come across with the first run of the afternoon.

Senior Ryan Alsdorf (Bethel, N.Y./Sullivan West) was on the hill for the Privateers and allowed a one out walk but got out of the first unscathed. In the second, he wasn't as lucky with the first three Panthers reaching base to load the bases. A key error extended the inning, which also allowed two unearned runs to score to give Old Westbury a 2-1 lead going to the third.

In the top of the frame, Sollin tripled to left centerfield with two down, and was brought in to score on a base knock by Longo to tie the game at two. Maritime regained the lead in the fourth as Monahan walked and then stole second and third. Stewart brought home Monahan with a groundout to put the Privateers ahead 3-2.

Alsdorf continued to roll aside from a two-out hit in the fourth. Maritime took a 4-2 lead as McLaughlin singled up the middle, followed by Longo doubling down the line to chase home McLaughlin.

Both starting pitchers continued to roll as the game moved along to the bottom of the eighth inning. Freshman Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) came on in relief, with the first four batters reaching.

The Privateers went back to the bullpen quickly with senior James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) coming on next with the score tied at four. Very yielded two inherited runners to score, and allowed one of his own to score as Old Westbury opened up a 7-4 lead.

Maritime went down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to seal the win for the Panthers.

D'Ancona took the loss in game one, as he was unable to retire a batter in the bottom of the eighth. Alsdorf didn't factor into the decision, as he did not allow an earned run over his seven innings of work as he allowed five hits and struck out a pair. Very allowed one run over his one inning of work on a hit and intentional walk.

At this time, Maritime (4-7, 1-1 Skyline) is scheduled to play City College of New York on Reinhart Field this Wednesday at 7 p.m. as the road team, however that game is subject to change as Sunday's postponed Skyline doubleheader against St. Joseph's (LI) which may take precedent.
