THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Maritime baseball team defeated the NYU Violets on Wednesday evening from a brisk Reinhart Baseball Field by the score of 10-8.

In the win, senior Albert Doerbecker (Point Lookout, N.Y./Long Beach)and sophomore Brian McLaughlin (Massapequa, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) both knocked the ball out of the park, while McLaughlin also finished with four runs scored. The pair was also the only two players to have multi-hit games as the Privateers got hits from seven of their starting nine.

On the hill, freshman Brian Hughes (Maspeth, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy) got the start and allowed one unearned run over his three innings of work, but did not factor into the decision. Earning the win was rookie Anthony D'Ancona (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), who tossed four innings while allowing one run on three hits and also struck out four. Senior James Very (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) came on in the ninth and sealed the win with his second save of the season.

Maritime got on the board first with senior Joe Longo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) collecting a one-out single, McLaughlin then singled and then moved up to second on a wild pitch as the Privateers got a pair of runners into scoring position. During the next at bat, another wild pitch was thrown allowing the first run to cross the plate. Senior Matthew Sollin (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) grounded out to score McLaughlin, putting Maritime up 2-0.

After Hughes retired the side in order in the top of the second, junior Paul Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) led off the bottom of the inning by getting plunked by a pitch then stole second. Freshman Aaron Schiavoni (Sag Harbor, N.Y./Pierson)singled up the middle to chase Woodburn home, and later came around to score as Doerbecker doubled down the rightfield line.

Hughes was touched up for one unearned run in the top of the third, but was able to get the last two batters of the inning without giving up anything further.

In the bottom of the third, McLaughlin and Sollin led off with back-to-back walks followed by junior Kevin Monahan (Seaford, N.Y./MacArthur) grounding out to put the runners into scoring position. McLaughlin scored on a passed ball, and a few batters later, Sollin was credited with a steal of home after the Violet pitcher threw the ball to second giving the Maritime catcher to run home with the team's sixth run.

Sophomore Ryan Heizman (Commack, N.Y./Commack) came on in the fourth and recorded a pair of strikeouts. In the fifth, Heizman was not able to record an out as the first five batters of the inning all reached base. D'Ancona came on and allowed a run to score via groundout as NYU had tied the game at six with its five-run fifth inning.

In the bottom of the inning, McLaughlin came up with one out and no one on and sent a 3-2 pitch over the right field fence to put the Privateers back up by a 7-6 score. D'Ancona set the Violets down in order, including a pair of strikeouts, in the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, freshman Chris Deddo (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) led off with a screaming double down the left field line, followed by Longo reaching first on a dropped pop up on the infield. McLaughlin grounded out as Longo was erased on the fielder's choice to put runners on the corners with one down.

The NYU pitcher attempted to pick off McLaughlin at first base, but rang the errant throw off of  McLaughlin's helmet allowing Deddo to score. Three batters later with sophomore Thomas Galli (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) at the plate, a wild pitch allowed McLaughlin to score as the Privateers increased their lead to 9-6.

NYU plated a run in the top of the eighth off of D'Ancona, but Maritime got the run back in the bottom of the inning as Doerbecker sent a booming home run sailing over the left centerfield fence towards to East River.

Very came on to pitch the ninth looking to seal the win for Maritime, but ran into an early speed bump as the first two batters reached. Very got the next two batters to ground out with one run scoring in the process. An infield single but runners on first and third, but the senior was able to get out of the frame with a groundout.

Picking up his first career win was D'Ancona, while Very picked up his second save of the year to tie the modern program record of saves in a season with two.

Maritime (3-6, 0-0 Skyline) will begin league play on Saturday afternoon when the team travels to Old Westbury for a pair of games beginning at 12 p.m. from the Jackie Robinson Complex on the Old Westbury campus.
