DeRaad Extends Home Run Record in Win

WHITTIER — Occidental home run champ Devon DeRaad extended his single-season record to 13 with another bomb, Jeffrey Johnson stayed hot at the plate and the Occidental baseball team finished the season strong, beating Whittier 14-9 in its season finale on Tuesday.

The Tigers finish the season in fifth in the SCIAC at 17-11 and 22-17 overall. Whittier closes the season in seventh at 9-19 and 11-28.

DeRaad, who led all of NCAA Division III for a good portion of the season in homers, hit a solo shot over the right-field wall in the top of the sixth inning.

Trailing 4-1 in the top of the fifth, the Tigers broke the game open with seven runs. DeRaad finished the day 3 for 5 with a pair of runs scored, three RBIs and a two-run double in the fifth to go along with his homer.

Johnson, who didn't start playing regularly until April this year, led a solid day by Oxy's seven graduating seniors, going 2 for 5 with a pair of runs and a RBI. Johnson finishes the year hitting .424 with a home run and 15 runs scored.

Fellow seniors Chris StrainVictor Munoz, A.J. Libuano, James Aubrey Jonathan Wong andJohnathan Brooks joined Johnson to go a combined 10 for 25 with seven runs and three RBIs against the Poets.

Munoz was 3 for 6 with a pair of runs scored and Wong went 3 for 5 with two RBIs.

Dean Abramson got the start and earned the win for Oxy. Whittier's Nick Garcia was charged with the loss.
