AMELIA, Ohio – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology head coach Jeff Jenkins became the 31st coach in the history of NCAA Division III baseball to win 700 career games as the Fightin' Engineers defeated Mount St. Joseph University 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Midland Field.
Jenkins became the 16th active member of the 700-win club as Rose-Hulman improved to 25-14 on the season. His resume also includes eight conference regular season or tournament championships and six NCAA Division III tournament appearances.
Jenkins career record stands at 700-465-2 in 29 seasons of Division III coaching, and his Rose-Hulman record is 655-400-1 in 26 years. Prior to his Rose-Hulman experience, Jenkins coached for two seasons at Heidelberg and one year at Bethany (W. Va.).
Rose-Hulman also secured the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament with Saturday's victory. The Fightin' Engineers will face No. 3 seeded Manchester in the first round of the HCAC Tournament on Thursday at Anderson University.
Offensively, Rose-Hulman pounded out 14 hits in the contest to earn its 25th victory of the season. Sophomore Kevin Jendra led the performance with four singles and one RBI. Junior Patrick Klima added three hits with a double and one run scored.
Other Rose-Hulman players with multiple hits included junior Donnie Waters with two singles, one run and one RBI; and junior Caleb Kissel with two singles, two runs scored and one RBI.
Junior Andrew Stull came out of the bullpen with three scoreless innings to earn the win and highlight the pitching performance. Stull allowed just one hit with two walks and one strikeout to move to 4-5 on the season. Freshman Joey Callahan, sophomore Cody Sunderhaus and junior Alec McNally backed Stull's performance with a scoreless final three innings.
Corey Reimer was the lone Mount St. Joseph player with multiple hits after finishing 2-2 with a double and one run scored.
Rose-Hulman completed the regular season at 25-14 overall and 17-9 in conference play, while Mount St. Joseph finished the year at 13-23 and 8-18 in league games. The HCAC Tournament is scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday at top-seeded Anderson.
