Butler Has Four Hits, Drives in Three as R-MC Wins at Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Freshman Jeffrey Butler (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) went 4 for 5 with two runs and three RBI as the Randolph-Macon baseball team defeated host Huntingdon 9-3 Saturday afternoon in the Huntingdon Firehouse Classic.

The Yellow Jackets (3-0) defeated three teams receiving votes in the D3baseball.com national poll. R-MC is ranked No. 32 in the Collegiate Baseball poll and also received voted in the D3baseball.com poll.

Butler had a two-run single to cap a three-run second as the Yellow Jackets took a lead they would not relinquish. After the Hawks (1-1) tallied one in the bottom of the second, senior Michael Trentham (Midlothian, Va./James River) had a sacrifice fly to highlight a two-run third as R-MC built a 5-1 advantage.

Huntingdon added a run in the fifth before senior Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) had a sacrifice fly and senior Travis Lodge (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth as the visitors took a 7-2 lead. Butler singled and scored in the eighth to make it an 8-2 contest. The Hawks tallied their final run in the bottom of the eighth before Butler's RBI double in the ninth made the final 9-3.

The Yellow Jackets had four doubles among their 12 hits as Butler, Trentham, senior Christian Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) and junior Herminio Azor (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) each had two-baggers.

Sophomore Greg Beale (Chesapeake, Va./Nansemond Suffolk) picked up the win in relief, working 2.0 innings with two hits, one run, one walk and two strikeouts. He was the first of six arms out of the pen for R-MC. Freshman Colin Selby (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) went 4.0 innings in his first collegiate start with four hits, one run, two walks and one strikeout.

Randolph-Macon plays its home opener on Saturday, Feb. 13, at 2 p.m. against RPI, followed by a doubleheader against on Sunday, Feb. 14 at noon.
