UMHB rallies to stun Texas Lutheran 17-14

Seguin, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team exploded for eight runs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game and tacked on four more in the top of the tenth in a wild 17-14 victory over Texas Lutheran University Wednesday night in Seguin. UMHB improves to 3-4 on the season with its third straight victory. The Bulldogs drop to 5-3 on the year with the loss.

TLU jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second. UMHB cut it to 3-2 with on a run-scoring error and a Scott Stephens RBI single in the top of the third inning. Keaton Bohrmann's three-run homer stretched the Bulldog lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth and TLU used four hits and a costly Cru error to put up five runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-2. Emery Atkisson singled home two runs in the top of the sixth and Seth Martin added an RBI single to pull UMHB to within 11-5, but the Bulldogs added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead back to 13-5. Chase Burrow singled home a run and Max Conway doubled home another in the top of the ninth to close the gap to 13-7. Cody Stone added an RBI groundout and Atkisson singled home another run to make it 13-9 TLU. Matt Mazoch had a two-out RBI single and Dakota Parsons followed with an RBI double to cut it to 13-11 and bring the go-ahead run to the plate and Stephens reached on an error that scored two runs to tie the game at 13. The game would go to extra innings at 13-13. UMHB took its first lead of the game when Stone scored on an error in the top of the tenth inning to make it 14-13 Cru and Mazoch provided some breathing room with a two-run single. Parsons then doubled home Mazoch to make it 17-13 UMHB heading into the bottom of the tenth. Trenton Ray homered to lead off that frame to make it 17-14 and TLU would put another runner on base before Cory Farr closed it out for the Cru with a strikeout and groundout.

Stuart Hennigar earned the win for UMHB to move to 1-0 on the season and Farr notched his second save of the year. Parsons had four hits and Stephens and Will Stafford added three hits apiece to lead the Cru's 21-hit attack. Mazoch and Atkisson drove in three runs apiece and four UMHB players had two hits each. Axel Liciaga took the loss for Texas Lutheran after giving up all four runs in the top of the tenth. Five different players finished with two hits for the Bulldogs and both teams committed five errors in the contest.

The Cru will return to action with the start of American Southwest Conference play this weekend. UMHB will take on defending ASC champion U.T.-Tyler in a three-game series in Tyler on Friday and Saturday.
