Shoremen Win Season Opener Against New Paltz, 14-0

Offense Pounds Out 14 Hits and Pitching Combines For 13 Strikeouts

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington College broke open a scoreless tie with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added four runs each in the last of the seventh and eighth innings on its way to a 14-0 win over visiting New Paltz in a non-conference baseball game on Saturday afternoon at Athey Baseball Park in the season opener for both the Shoremen and the Hawks.

How It Happened
-With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Wes Robertson singled to shallow centerfield to plate Charlie Meder for the game's first run.
-With two outs and WC leading 1-0, Luke D'Ostilio in his first collegiate game put the Shoremen ahead 4-0 on a triple down the right-field line that plated Matt Tancredi, Robertson and Garrett Richardello.
-Bryan Baquer capped the six-run outburst with a two-run home run to left that plated D'Ostilio.
-Hirschbaum highlighted a three-run seventh inning with a three RBI triple to left-center.
-Joe Lozupone led off the last of the eighth with a solo homer to left to ignite a four-run frame.

For The Shoremen (1-0)
-Hitting: Hirschbaum (three RBI, two hits, two runs and a triple), D'Ostilio (three RBI, two hits and two runs), Lozupone (two hits and two runs), Meder (two runs), Baquer (two RBI and two runs), Richardello (two runs), Tancredi (two hits)  
-Pitching: Logan Dubbé (win 1-0, four innings pitched, five hits, four strikeouts and one walk), P.J. Mikulus (three innings and tied career-best with six strikeouts), Nick Popolizio (two innings and three strikeouts)
-Washington had 14 hits at the dish and on the mound three pitchers combined to tally 13 strikeouts.

For New Paltz (0-1)
-Hitting: Taylor Anderson (two walks and one hit)
-Pitching: Conor Donachie (loss 0-1, 4 1/3 innings pitched, four runs allowed on three hits, five strikeouts and no walks)
-The Hawks had five hits and a pair of errors in the game.

Notes
-It was the first meeting between the two schools in baseball.
-The only other meeting between Washington College and New Paltz was in softball on March 1, 2014 in Salem, Va. where the Shorewomen downed the Hawks, 9-4.
-Donachie (NP) and Mikulus (WC), the starting pitchers in the game attended the same high school, Chaminade on Long Island.  Both graduated from the Long Island high school in 2014.
-Second straight season the Shoremen scored 14 runs in the season opener.  Last year, the Shoremen downed College of Staten Island, 14-1, in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
