San Antonio, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team grabbed an early lead but could not answer DeSales University's nine runs in the seventh and eighth innings as the Cru fell to the Bulldogs 11-4 Monday afternoon in San Antonio. The loss drops UMHB to 6-9 on the year while DeSales moves to 1-1 on the season with the victory.

The Cru took a 1-0 lead on a Dakota Parsons RBI single in the top of the first inning. Connor Lafferty led off the bottom of the second to even the game at 1-1. The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third inning. It would stay that way into the sixth inning before Scott Stephens drove in a run with a squeeze bunt and a run-scoring error gave UMHB a 3-2 lead. DeSales put together four hits, two walks and a passed ball to put five runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-3 lead. Tommy DePaul's two-run double stretched that lead to 9-3 in the bottom of the eighth and the Bulldogs added two more in the frame for an 11-3 edge. Seth Martin's RBI fielder's choice cut it to 11-4 in the top of the ninth, but that's as close as UMHB would get.

Ty Johnson took the loss for the Cru to drop to 0-1 on the year after giving up two runs in a third of an inning of relief. UMHB used six pitchers in the game. Tyler Cooperman picked up the win for DeSales with three and two-thirds innings of three-hit relief. Parsons, Caleb Davis and Emery Atkisson all had two hits apiece for UMHB, but the rest of the line-up managed just one more. DePaul had three hits and Danny Licamara drove in three runs for the Bulldogs.

The Cru will now return home to host four games in three days this weekend. That stretch opens with a 6:00 PM single game against Baldwin-Wallace on Friday at Red Murff Field.
