DelVal Baseball Finishes Florida Trip 7-2 After Doubleheader Split With Drew

FORT PIERCE (FL) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team ended its spring break trip to Florida with a doubleheader split against Drew University on Friday. The Aggies came from behind to win the opener 7-6 before dropping the second by a 15-10 margin.

DelVal returns to Doylestown with a 7-2 record. The Rangers are 5-5 on the season.

The Aggies trailed 6-1 entering the bottom of the fifth in game one. Junior left fielder Mike Anusky and sophomore shortstop Kevin Crill led off with consecutive walks. After a groundout, junior center fielder Kyle Wenger scored Anusky with a single. Senior designated hitter Matt Dewald followed with a base hit and Crill came home. Sophomore catcher Sammy Amos was hit by a pitch to load the bases and sophomore first baseman Jeremy Stewart drew a walk to cut the deficit to two.

In the sixth, junior second baseman Ben Lippincott hit a two-out single and Wenger smacked a double to left center to make it a one-run game. Stewart began the seventh with a single and a sacrifice bunt by junior right fielder Nate Cummings moved freshman pinch runner Josh Morgan to second. Morgan went to third on a groundout and Anusky walked. With two outs, Crill got a base hit through the right side to score Morgan for the tying run. Lippincott then laced a 2-2 pitch into right field to bring home Anusky and win the game.

Wenger finished three-for-three with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Dewald had two hits (three at-bats), a double and two RBI. Junior lefty Trevor Dalton picked up the win in relief (2-0).

Catcher Mike Miraglia went two-for-four for the Rangers with two home runs, four RBI and two runs scored. Third baseman Jonathan Rodrigues produced three hits (three at-bats) and scored once. One of his hits was a double. Right fielder Ryan Sabbag drove in two runs. Right-hander Joe Dahut took the loss (0-2).

In game two, DelVal put up three runs in the first and seven in the second for a 10-2 lead after two. However, the Rangers rallied against the Aggie bullpen and scored 13 unanswered runs for the win.

Sabbag went four-for-four with a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Left fielder Tommy Broyles tallied four hits (five at-bats), a double and three runs scored. Second baseman Anthony Feltre registered a double and four RBI. Left-hander Dylan Baxter threw 5.1 shutout innings and allowed three hits in relief for the win (2-0).

DelVal junior left fielder Bobby Altieri, Amos and Stewart all went three-for-four. Altieri and Stewart both had a double and Stewart also knocked in three runs. Wenger recorded a triple, a homer, three RBI and two runs. The home run was his second of the season. Sophomore right-hander Steve Smith suffered the loss (0-2).

The Aggies visit Gwynedd Mercy University for a non-conference game on Thursday, March 17 (3:30 p.m.).
