The Hamilton College baseball team opened the Florida portion of its spring trip by splitting a doubleheader with Minnesota-Morris Monday in Auburndale, Fla. The Continentals won the opener 3-2 on a walk-off home run by Kenny Collins '17 before the Cougars rallied to win game two 7-6.
Trailing 2-1 heading into their final at-bat, the Continentals put the tying run on base with one out when Brett Mele '17 was hit by a pitch. One batter later, Collins hit his first career home run to give the Continentals their third win in as many games.
Collins also scored Hamilton's first run, reaching on a two-out triple in the fifth and coming home on a double by Ryan Wolfsberg '17.
The Cougars scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 2-1.
The walk-off home run made a winner of Finlay O'Hara '17, who faced the minimum three batters to retire the side in the top of the seventh.
Starter Spencer Vogelbach '18 scattered six hits in six innings, striking out four without giving up an earned run.
In the nightcap, Hamilton took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth before the Cougars scored three times in each of their last two at bats.
The Continentals scored once in the top of the seventh and put the tying and go-ahead runs on second and third with one out before Minnesota-Morris secured the win by striking out the last two batters.
Dean Rosenberg '18 led off with a double and went to third on a pinch-hit single by Ian Nish '19. Mele doubled home a run but the Cougars stranded Nish and Mele in scoring position.
Rosenberg and Andrew Haser '17 gave Hamilton a 2-0 first-inning lead with run-scoring singles.
After the Cougars got a run back in the second the Continentals scored in each of their next three times up to push their advantage to 5-1. Rosenberg singled in Haser in the third and fifth, sandwiched around a Kenny Collins single that scored Brian Ferrell '16 in the fourth.
Minnesota-Morris pulled to within a run by scoring three times in the bottom of the fifth. An inning later a single by Chandler Erickson tied the score and Jackson Gessell gave the Cougars the lead with a two-out two-run home run.
Rosenberg's four hits and three runs batted in were career bests and Haser added three hits.
The Continentals (3-1) are idle until Thursday when they face SUNY Fredonia in a 1:30 p.m. doubleheader.
