HR, clutch relief in last inning aids Tommies' sweep

Senior Dan Ziemann's two-run homer run in the top of the seventh inning erased a 1-0 deficit and helped St. Thomas score a 2-1 win over host Northwestern-St. Paul in game one of Wednesday non-conference season-opening baseball doubleheader in Roseville.

The Tommies (2-0) pounded 13 hits and won game two, 9-3, to complete the sweep of the two seven-inning contests played in chilly, windy conditions.

Ziemann had a two-run double and three walks in four trips in game two to close the day with four RBI.

UST junior releiver Caleb Fernholz -- pitching his first game since the May 2014 College World Series -- escaped a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the last of the seventh inning. It was one of three bases-loaded scenarios on the day that UST hurlers worked through with minimal damage. Fernholz missed 2015 with an arm injury.

In game one, the Toms were down to their last two outs in the seventh inning after being held to just two hits over 6 1-3 shtuout innings. Sam Barr walked and Ziemann slugged his third homer of his two-year varsity career for a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles (4-9) had an excellent chance to tie or win in their final at-bat as they used a single, walk and hit by pitch to fill the bases with none out. But Fernholz, who came on in the fourth inning to relieve starter Eric Veglahn, got a pop out and two swinging strikeouts of the Eagles' 2-3-4 batters to end the game. That stranded the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.

In the nightcap, Jake Smith and Brady Johnson each had three hits, Hunter Hart had two hits, and Jimmy Dolan had two hits and two RBI. UST hurlers J.J. Jeronimus, Dominic Reed and Alex Ogren combined to strike out 12 and limit the Eagles to three runs and five hits.

The Tommies are scheduled to play Saturday at Central (Iowa) and Sunday at noon at Wartburg (Iowa) in road doubleheaders.
