UMHB edges Ozarks 4-3

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team grabbed the lead with a three-run second inning and then held on for a 4-3 victory over the University of the Ozarks Sunday in Belton. The Cru improves to 9-12 overall and 4-5 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Eagles to 8-10 overall and 3-6 in the ASC on the year.

UMHB opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Will Stafford singled home the first run and Emery Atkisson added a two-run single. Ozarks cut it to 3-1 on Dean Igert's RBI single in the top of the third. UMHB answered that run when Robbie Gillen scored on an Eagle throwing error in the bottom of the fourth inning. Justin Crider tripled home a run in the top of the eighth inning and scored on Andrew Beck's RBI single to pull Ozarks to within 4-3. The Eagles had the tying run on base, but the Cru turned its fourth double play of the day to end the threat. UMHB had a chance to add a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Beck threw out Max Conway at the plate on Stafford's single. Ozarks put the tying run on base in the top of the ninth, but Conway returned the favor by throwing Zachary Walker out on an attempted steal and Cory Farr got a strikeout to end the game for his seventh save of the season.

Casey Frazier scattered seven hits and allowed just one run in seven innings for UMHB to earn the win and even his record at 1-1. Stafford and Riley Davis had three hits apiece to lead the Cru. Hunter Coleman took the loss for Ozarks to drop to 0-2. Four different players had two hits apiece to lead the Eagles' offense.

The Cru will continue its home stand with a three-game conference series against Sul Ross State. The two teams open that series with a 4:00 PM doubleheader on Thursday and close out the set with a 1:00 PM single game at Red Murff Field on Friday.
