Lancaster Bible Splits Doubleheader with John Jay

The Lancaster Bible baseball team split a doubleheader with John Jay on Saturday at Charger Field as the Chargers took game one, 10-3 and lost game two, 12-8. The Chargers finish their five-game home stand with a 4-1 record and are now 8-7 this season. John Jay improved to 3-13 this season with the doubleheader split.

Lancaster Bible 10, John Jay 3 -- Game 1
How it Happened: John Jay opened the scoring in the top of the first as the Bloodhounds catcher Dylan Laudano singled home RJ Davila to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. The Chargers responded in the home half of the second inning as they had three hits and took advantage of two errors en route to a four-run inning.Josh Mayer had an RBI single in the inning, while Hunter Gray added an RBI groundout.

Lancaster Bible's lead was cut to one over the next two innings as the Bloodhounds scored in the third and fourth innings, but Lancaster Bible responded once again with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to earn a five-run lead at 8-3. Justin Taylor's two-run double down the left-field line made it a 6-3 game and Brian Niedergall's single to center three batters later made it 8-3 in favor of the Chargers. The Chargers scored two more times in the home half of the sixth as Adam Cohick had an RBI single, while Niedergall added his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly.

Inside the Box Score: Lancaster Bible starter Nate Burns threw five solid innings as he scattered eight hits and allowed just three runs while striking out five...Burns improves to 2-2 this season and has had back-to-back outings that resulted in wins as he won last Saturday against Penn St. York...Cohick finished 3-for-4 with two RBI in game one, while Niedergall was 1-for-4 with two RBI...Mayer was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI and Taylor was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

John Jay 12, Lancaster Bible 8 -- Game 2
How it Happened: A back-and-forth game for all seven innings, the Chargers opened the scoring in the first as Erich Carroll's sacrifice fly scored Hunter Gray who had led off the inning with a single. John Jay battled back in the third inning with three runs as Esteban Soler jump-started the rally with a single and stolen base. Laudano's double later in the inning scored Brian Garcia to give the Bloodhounds a 3-1 lead. 

Carroll was at it again in the bottom of the third as he smashed his third home run of the season over the left-center field wall and tied the game at 3-3. The game remained tied at 3-3 until the top of the fifth when the Bloodhounds scored on a sacrifice fly from Charlee Rodriguez. Lancaster Bible pitcher Mark Sherriff was able to get the Chargers out of any further damage in the inning and Taylor tied the game in the home half of the fourth with his 13th home run of the season.

John Jay wasted little time re-taking the lead as Zach Hyde's single in the top of the fifth scored Davila and gave the visitors a 5-4 lead. The Chargers answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Chargers used an error and wild pitch to tie the game and then take the lead. Gray's sacrifice fly to center that scored JJ Sanchez made it 7-5 and the Chargers needed just three outs to complete the sweep.

The Bloodhounds had other ideas as they sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh and took advantage of four walks and an error to score seven runs and grab a 12-7 lead. John Jay had three hits in the inning as well, which was capped off by Rodriguez's single that scored Hyde.

The Chargers got one run back in the home half of the seventh, but could not bring the tying run to the plate and lost for the first time since March 11.

Inside the Box Score: Taylor finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI...Carroll was 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored...Jensen King was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI...Braden Elliott was 1-for-4...Gray finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI...Lancaster Bible starter Frank McCreary did not factor in the decision as he went four innings and allowed four hits while striking out one...John Jay's Zach Hyde was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Extra Bases: Justin Taylor is batting .509 this season and already has 28 hits in the Chargers first 15 games...He had 13 home runs and 31 runs batted in...Taylor has also scored 25 runs and is slugging 1.309...Carroll has raised his batting average 85 points over the past two days as he is now batting .367 after entering Friday's game at .282...Carroll is second on the team with 18 hits and has driven in 12 runs...Lancaster Bible is 4-3 this season at Charger Field.
